Zurich has announced the borth of 3 Asian lion cubs (1 has since died).
0.0.3 beaded lizard
0.0.3 Fiji lizard, the second successful hatching since 2007
 
Also born this year at the zoo include 4 gelada and 2 giant anteater
 
If anyone can help me, I'm putting together a database with statistics of some of the world's top zoos. Essentially, I need the annual attendance figures for the following Swiss zoos:

Zoo Zurich, Zoologischer Garten Basel

Can anyone help me? Is there a good internet source where these can be looked up?
 
A male black rhino has arrived at the zoo from Doue la Fontaine, to join the two females there, Wanda and Samira, the male is called Jeremy, and was born in Dvur Kralove in 2000.

Here are the latest figures for both Basel and Zurich Zoo (taken from the annual reports 2009):

Basel: 6611 animals from 659 species; 1'697'760 visitors

Zurich: 3906 animals from 368 species; 1'800'426 visitors

Unfortunately, both annual reports are only available in German.
 
Two sumatran orang-utan, Tuah and her son Dakulu, disappeard from Zurich Zoo.

Any idea what happened with them?
 
"Tuah" and her son "Dahulu" were both transferred to Santillana del Mar (Spain) at the end of last year. Apparently "Tuah" gave birth on Christmas day. As an experienced mother she is supposed to "teach" two hand-reared female Orangutans how to raise offspring.
 
Have just been having a look on zootierlist and noticed that,Zurich has been keeping Livingstone's Flying Fox since 2010,now can anyone tell me if they have a breeding group or just a single sex group?

Well, to be honest, you didn't miss that much.

Altough the additional view from above is nice, it is a metallic construction that - at least at the moment - doesn't really fit into the jungle theme. And in fact you don't see much more of the animals then before. Imo, Leipzig has done it better.

I thought you might have been able to see some of the lemurs and birds (maybe ibis?) up in the canopy? It was very hard to see some of the species in Masaola (which is great in some ways) especially the lemurs.

Disappointing that it doesn't fit with the very naturalistic theme of the rest of the exhibit.

As I have the opportunity to visit Zoo Zurich and its Masoala Hall very often (I'm working in Zurich and I am living just about 15 km away from the Zoo), I know where I can expect to see the lemurs and birds (and the geckos and chamaeleons as well). I would say that from the canopy walk, only the chance to see some smaller birds and flying foxes are higher... (just personal impression).

You are very lucky to visit it often, it is a very nice zoo, especially Masaola.

I have visited once, and was a big fan of Masaola. I saw 9 bird species, 3 reptiles (tortoise, chameleon, gecko), and 2 mammals (bat and red-fronted brown lemur). I was in there for about an hour, but I could have spent many days in there trying to find everything.

I am bound to disagree ;)

Surely, Masoala was great without it. The construction is placed on one of the narrow sides of the hall, so it does not interfere with the jungle experience from the ground at all. But it adds a great view and indeed it is much easier to see the birds and lemurs. Furthermore it's planned to hide the construction underneath a plant cover, but of course that will take time to grow.

There is one thing which could have been done better though. At the highest point, for which everyone is aiming of course, only 5 people can stand and observ first row. As a lot of space is wasted to the stairs. Here some clever building could have generated much more space.
