Australia Zoo Australia Zoo news

Australia zoos first primate birth with two Ring-tailed Lemurs being born both females. Also the zoo imported ten male Ring-tailed Lemurs from the USA to join the four males living
on the Island.

Jabiru 96 already announced the birth of the lemurs.Refer to page 3.Any news why they imported the 10 males?

Good to see they are doing well with Giraffes there's not much else happening there, The ten year plan from 2006 to expand the zoo has still only resulted in stage one (of three) being built to date.

No mention any more in regards to the wanted species mentioned in the past such as Gorillas, Orangs among others. No monkeys or Apes there. Ringtail Lemurs appear to be the only primate on public view, No Lions or Antelopes can be seen in fact even the Cheetah don't appear to have an exhibit and the public can only see them if the staff have them out on a walk somewhere!

The zoo has received two Eastern Diamond Back Rattlesnakes from Zoos Victoria and a pair of King Cobra from Australian Reptile Park this week (some of the only none native venomous snakes in Queensland?)

So keeping (and breeding?) of potential invasive (and highly venomous) snakes species is allowed in OZ, but not the import of flamingos (and their eggs) and large exotic herbivores???????

The bird and herbivore restrictions are about potential exotic diseases that might harm the agricultural industry, not about the possibility of these animals being invasive. My feeling is that the regulations are unnecessarily restrictive, but that probably speaks to the economic importance of the agricultural industry vs the zoo industry and the priorities of zoos.

Exotic reptiles are legally restricted to zoos, and it is fair to say there have been no feral populations of reptiles established from zoo sources over the last 150 years. And we already have a few highly venomous snakes. (Having said that there are concerns about populations of exotic reptiles illegally in private hands)

@MRJ: Thanks for your reply and your explication.
Still wonder how big the chance of introducing an exotic disease is, when an exotic herbivore - say a giraffe - comes from a western zoo (where no health problems were ascertained) and has passed your strong quarantine regulations.

Seen on Terry Irwin's twitter page, meerkats have arrived. Not sure how many or from what zoo, anyone know? Their "Meerkat Adventure" area is set to open to the public in September.

They've got ten females. They arrived a little while ago now but I don't know from where.

Ten?! Holy cow. I assume they'd all come from the same family since rivals are difficult to introduce. I'm putting my money on either Melbourne or Altina. Or maybe they imported?

I believe Orangs are one of the next major projects at Austzoo!

That sounds exciting with Auckland Zoo and Orana Wildlife Park hoping to acquire Sumatran orangutans in the near future.

It'd be good if Australia Zoo decided to hold chimpanzee and gorillas in the future too. Would provide our current holding zoos with some more options.

Can not see Chimps or Gorillas in the short term progress at the zoo has been very slow in resent years!
