Species we have lost over the last quarter of a century

A few of the more recent losses sting a bit for me as well...

~Thylo

Guessing you mean the Pallid Scops, Javan Surili and Fanaloka :p given you visited the collections holding the first two whilst in the UK, and would have visiting the collection holding the third one were it still around.

The Checkered Elephant Shrew stings, of course, but the two recent losses that sting even more for me are the Northern White Rhinoceros and the Saharan Weasel given that - like the Checkered - they are species I could have seen on my upcoming trip but unlike the Checkered are either a dead species walking (the rhino) or a taxon specifically belonging to my favourite group (the weasel) :p

Indeed, especially the surili. The others you mentioned above also sting as I will be visiting Plzen within time and, had the rhinoceros still been live, I would have added Dvur to the trip as well.

As the person who discovered the Plantain Squirrel at Wingham, I can definitely tell you they were a new arrival after TLD had his post.

That said, while you're certainly going about your "corrections" in the most obnoxious way possible (don't worry, he won't read this), this does point out perhaps a need to go through and update this thread. Personally, I'm pretty excited to see how many species have returned to public collections recently!

He won't read it, eh.

He won't read it, eh.

mm, yes, making comments like this and #341 above, without actually acknowledging any of the other more relevant comments from people, simply makes it seem more like you are deliberately being obnoxious.

As FunkyGibbon said earlier, trying to provide updates to a thread such as this can be welcomed, but not when the person doing so seems to be deliberately avoiding interaction with other members on the matter.

Chestnut-backed Sparrow-lark (Eremopterix leucotis) - last held in 1998 at Tierpark Berlin. The only image of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery is a photograph of a wild individual in Ethiopia; however a handful of photographs of the related Fischer's Sparrow Lark (E. leucopareia) are labelled as this taxon.

Güldenstädt's Redstart (Phoenicurus erythrogastrus) - last held in 2015 at Zoopark Zajezd, one of several collections to hold the taxon within the timespan in question. There are several images of this taxon, including the following photograph taken in 2011 at Plzen:

plzen zoo still has Guldenstadts Redstart

Eyebrowed Thrush (Turdus obscurus) - last held in 1994 at Rotterdam. There are no images of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery.

In the post in question TLD mentioned two species of sparrow-lark, one which is no longer kept and one which still is, and was perfectly clear on which species is no longer held in Europe and which is still held at Hagenbeck.

As Thylo correctly notes, Tierpark Hagenbeck holds a different species - Eremopterix leucopareia - to the one mentioned in this thread as having been lost. If you are going to trawl ZTL for any species which have returned to Europe since I mentioned their loss, you may find it useful to pay attention to the taxonomic names rather than the common names :p given the fact that ZTL is a German site and as such the common names chosen for some species are sometimes inaccurate or duplicated between multiple sister taxa.

As a matter of fact, this species has *returned* to the collection within the last few months, as opposed to the collection "still" having the species :p

Yet another new arrival within the last year :) and yes, all of the Baltic States count as European for the purposes of this thread, as does the Kaliningrad Oblast.

This thread has gone from a very interesting one, to one of the most frustrating, but at the same time strangely entertaining threads on the entire site. Bravo!

Echo paeakeets (Mauritius parakeet) have gone since the last one died in December (?) on Jersey

Thought it was about time I updated the thread with a group or two I had not covered yet, along with a few species which have disappeared in recent months belonging to groups already covered.

However, I will start by doing a full index of previous posts - there have been a few already, but the switch to the new forum software has broken a lot of the links :p so I might as well do one afresh.

Species lost in recent months

Rufous-backed Redstart
(Phoenicurus erythronotus) - last held in 2016 at Plzen. There are no images of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery.

Celebes White-eye (Zosterops consobrinorum) - last held in 2016 at Plzen. Despite having been held at four collections within the last decade, there is only one image of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery; the following photograph shows the last individual in Europe:

Indian Musk Shrew (Suncus murinus) - last held in 2016 at Plzen. Despite being held in several European collections during the timespan in question, the only image of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery is of an individual displayed within an Asian collection.

Silvery Mole-rat (Heliophobius argenteocinereus) - last held in 2016 at Plzen. There is a single image of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery, taken at the aforementioned collection in 2011:

Sumatran Surili (Presbytis melalophos) - last held in 2017 at Howletts Wild Animal Park. There are several photographs of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery, including the following photograph taken in 2016:

Does anybody know the status or species of white-eye kept at the Eden Project in Cornwall? Several sources describe this species (alternately described as the Celebes, Sulawesi and pale-bellied white-eye) as being the one present in the rainforest biome there. A photo of at least a pair of them on the species' Wikipedia page taken there around 2015. I noticed that the Eden Project has no entry on Zootierliste - I'm wondering if it may be possible that the species is still present.

And now a few groups which I had not previously covered:

Wallcreeper taxa lost since 1990

Wallcreeper
(Tichodroma muraria) - last held in c.2016 at Alpenzoo Innsbruck. There are a small number of photographs depicting this taxon within the Zoochat gallery, including the following photograph taken by myself in 2015 at Alpenzoo. The individual in this photograph was the last in captivity anywhere in the world:

Bat taxa lost since 1990

Serotine (Eptesicus serotinus) - last held in c.2010 at Kiev Zoo. There are no images of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery.

Lesser Bulldog Bat (Noctilio albiventris) - last held in 2008 at Zoo Berlin. There are no images of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery.

Indian Short-nosed Fruit Bat (Cynopterus sphinx) - last held in 2007 at Tierpark Berlin. The only images of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery are of wild and captive individuals in Asia.

Indonesian Short-nosed Fruit Bat (Cynopterus titthaecheilus) - last held in 2012 at
Tiergarten Schönbrunn. The only images of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery are of captive individuals in Asia.

Sulawesi Bare-backed Fruit Bat (Dobsonia exoleta) - last held in 2000 at Zoo Berlin. There are no images of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery.

Franquet's Epauletted Bat (Epomops franqueti) - last held in 2005 at Plzen. There are no images of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery.

Hammer-headed Bat (Hypsignathus monstrosus) - last held in 2001 at Plzen. There are no images of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery.

Malagasy Flying Fox (Pteropus rufus) - last held in 2000 at Ebbs Raritätenzoo. There are no images of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery.

Seychelles Flying Fox (Pteropus seychellensis) - last held in 1993 at Saarbrücken. There are no images of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery.

Philippine Gray Flying Fox (Pteropus speciosus) - last held in 2011 at Moscow. There are no images of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery.

Sulawesi Stripe-faced Fruitbat (Styloctenium wallacei) - last held in 2015 at Plzen. There are no images of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery.

Armadillo taxa lost since 1990

Southern Naked-tailed Armadillo
(Cabassous unicinctus) - last held in 1992 at Kilverstone. The only photographs of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery are of captive individuals in South America.

Pink Fairy Armadillo (Chlamyphorus truncatus) - last held in the early 1990's at Cotswold Wildlife Park. The only image of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery is a photograph of a taxidermy specimen.

Southern Long-nosed Armadillo (Dasypus hybridus) - last held in 2010 at Veszprem. There are no images of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery; however, as the species was held for several years in the 2000's at Paradise Wildlife Park in the UK I suspect it is possible photographs were lost in the Great Purge.

Seven-banded Armadillo (Dasypus septemcinctus) - last held in 1995 at Budapest. There are no images of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery.

Pichi (Zaedyus pichiy) - last held in 1994 at Cotswold Wildlife Park. There are no images of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery - although several photographs of captive armadillo in South America labelled as this species *are* present within the gallery, they all depict misidentified Screaming Hairy Armadillo. A similar misidentification is the reason for a single European collection - Tierpark Donnersberg - claiming to currently hold this species.

Pangolin taxa lost since 1990

Tree Pangolin
(Manis tricuspis) - last held in 2007 at Paris Menagerie. Along with several photographs taken of captive individuals in the USA, there is a single photograph in the Zoochat gallery of the last individual present in Europe:

Cetacean taxa lost since 1990

Commerson's Dolphin
(Cephalorhynchus commersonii) - last held in 2004 at Duisburg. Along with several photographs of captive individuals in the USA and Asia, there is a single photograph of an individual at the aforementioned collection, taken in 1998:

Short-beaked Common Dolphin (Delphinus delphis) - last held in 2009 at Constanta Delphinarium; the individual in question, like all other holdings of this species in Europe, was a short-lived rescue animal. The only photographs of this taxon in the Zoochat gallery are of wild individuals in various locations around the world.

Long-finned Pilot Whale (Globicephala melas) - last held in 2009 at Lisbon Zoo. Along with a small number of photographs of wild individuals, there is a single image in the Zoochat gallery of the last individual in Europe taken shortly before it passed away:

Risso's Dolphin (Grampus griseus) - last held in 2012 at Oltremare Dolphinarium. The only images of this taxon in the Zoochat gallery are of captive individuals in the USA and Asia, and wild individuals in North America.

Atlantic White-sided Dolphin
(Lagenorhynchus acutus) - last held in 2000 at Harderwijk Dolfinarium. The individual in question, like all other holdings of this species in Europe, was a short-lived rescue animal. There are no photographs of this species in the Zoochat gallery.

White-beaked Dolphin (Lagenorhynchus albirostris) - last held in 2011 at Harderwijk Dolfinarium. The individual in question, like all other holdings of this species in Europe, was a short-lived rescue animal. There is a single image of the last individual in Europe present in the Zoochat gallery, taken shortly before it passed away:

False Killer Whale (Pseudorca crassidens) - last held in 1994 at Harderwijk Dolfinarium. The only images of this taxon in the Zoochat gallery are of captive individuals in the USA and a wild individual in New Zealand.

Guianan Tucuxi (Sotalia fluviatilis) - last held in 2009 at Allwetterzoo Munster. There are several photographs in the Zoochat gallery of the last individual in Europe, including this image taken a few weeks before it passed away:

Striped Dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) - last held in 2014 at Valencia L'Oceanogràfic. The individual in question, like all other holdings of this species in Europe bar one, was a short-lived rescue animal. The only image of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery depicts several wild individuals in Europe.

I saw a PhD advert last year for studying Sulawesi white-eyes at the Eden Project, so presumably they'll be there for at least a few years.

The photo attached as Celebes White-eye is wrong. On the photo is of another species: Chestnut-flanked White-eye (Zosterops erythropleurus). I uploaded a photo of Celebes White-eye done last year at the Zoo Plzen.

Fair enough :) I have now edited the post in question.
