Chester Zoo Chester Zoo 2017

Looking back in this thread I see there is confusion as to the home of the Babirusa.
Today I saw two in the Anoa paddock next to the Cheetahs
AND
three on Islands.

Developments on the new Madagascar (lemur) walk-through have taken an unexpected turn. By all accounts, demolishing the south-west wall and dens of the old polar bear enclosure along with the old ramp and steps on the corner, caused the south-east wall (behind the bee garden) to become unsafe, and it too has partially been demolished. The remaining north-east wall may now suffer the same fate, and ultimately could result in the total demolition of the structure. Hopefully it won't come to this.

Neither the contractors nor the zoo had budgeted or planned for this as the old walls of the polar bear enclosure were to continue sheltering the bee garden and serve as a natural barrier between the walk-through and Ark play area.

Additionally, planting that should've been retained between the penguins and the old wetland aviary has been accidentally removed, but that's a minor issue in comparison.

In the same area, the Caribbean flamingos remain locked indoors due to the pollution of their pool during the work on the penguin exhibit. Samples continue to be taken of the soil/water from the enclosure.

Visited again today:
-The binturongs had access to the outdoor Sun Bear enclosure today which had male Toni in although the binturong decided to stay inside while I was at the enclosure.
-The Javan Green Magpies were very active today, coming right up to mesh. One of the Rhinoceros Hornbill were also active outdoors today.
-Some Malaysian Dead-Leaf Mantis (Deroplatys desiccata) have replaced the Orchid Mantis in the invert areas of the Monsoon Forest.
-The Sun Skink and Long-tailed Lizard are now again signed in the vivariums by the Celebes Macaques, I did spot the Skink. Signage for the Mountain Horned Dragon has also been removed but they are still in there. The small viv on the end which had until recently held Philippine Tree Skink has been gutted and is being refurbished.
-The Azure-winged Magpie were very active today in the new European aviary. I counted 3 individuals.
-Signage for the Sumatran Laughingthrush outside the Tropical Realm has been removed but they're still there. Was very happy to see the 2 Yellow-faced Myna. The White-creasted Turaco appeared to be separate from the Snowy Robin-Chats and Congo Peafowl. The end of the upstairs of the Tropical Realm (Scops Owl) was shut off with a sign saying they are currently improving this area.
-The Aye-Aye's and Jumping Rats were both active today, I think they've changed the lighting in the female Aye-Aye enclosure.
-Superb Fruit Dove have been added to the first aviary in RORA in addition to the Chestnut Ground Thrush already living in this aviary. The indoor Orang enclosures have had some new bark added to them. Tombol (6 month old Bornean Orang) was interacting with one of the Lar Gibbons under the close supervision of his mother, Sarikei.
-I think new planting has been added to the Komodo Dragon enclosure.
- Saw the baby Saki Monkey and Spider Monkey and also the Anoa calf.

I hope these 'improvements' to the owl enclosure doesn't mean they're going off show for too long as I very much I like that species.

Some bad news. Some disrespectful kids have made a video on YouTube of them going into the zoo at night and jumping in the enclosures. I have contacted the zoo however I'm guessing they know something. Hopefully justice will be done and these kids will learn a lesson!

It's a sorry state of affairs when people feel the need to put both themselves and the zoo's animals in danger in order to validate themselves.

Idiots, why do this and then post it on somewhere you can then be prosecuted for it.......

Also that "Rhino" enclosure look very much like the zebra paddock to me.

I think that's the point (not the prosecution bit, but the bragging over how they are idiots). It wouldn't be difficult to find out who they are - their friend was arrested earlier in the day (on the video), so the connecting-of-dots to identify the others for the various offences (breaking and entering of several properties) would take about three minutes of police work.

I saw this video the other day while looking through to see if there were any nice trip videos people had uploaded as I do every now and again. Frankly this is appalling, I'm younger than these guys and I am shocked by there overt stupidity, recklessness and idiocy. The fact they've done this is wrong and I hope they're brought to justice, I just question why the hell people do this at all, I know someone who does stuff like this (not to this level mind you) and I find it utterly stupid. It's a brilliant testament to the younger generation when idiots do stuff like this isn't it? Thank you for reporting this though, I hope I never happens again!

I thought that too while watching it.

You should probably remove the link / video. If they have monetised it then any views will earn them money... or even if it just for notoriety I don't think we should encourage them by giving them views.

I couldn't stand to watch it long enough to get to the zoo bit. However, a pissed off zebra is at least as likely to kill you as a rhino.

I have deleted the video posted earlier tonight, and the discussion which resulted, as it is NOT something we want to be getting involved in given the legal ramifications.

Given that the zoo is - supposedly - crawling in security, there are a lot of questions to be answered here. In the meantime, I'd suggest reporting the video to YouTube would be a good idea, it's easy and only takes a few moments.

Moving on to another topic. The other day I was reading threads from 2010 and someone mentioned the zoo planned to have sea lions again at some point, is this still planned for the future?

Not sure if this is news but the Andean Bear cub has been named Madidi after Madidi National Park in Bolivia. No news on the sex but 'Madidi' definitley sounds feminine to me. Also I checked the pronounciation because it is Spanish here is the Spanish IPA: [maˈðiði]
