Mandrill-twin born at Magdeburg, a rare event
.
Magdeburg has just imported 3.0 marbled polecat from Novosibirsk, next year females should follow, also from Novosibirsk but they will have to wait fro the next breeding season. One of the males is already visible next to the bobak marmots in one of their former enclosures.
And somewhere TLD is frantically cancelling frights to Belgium![]()
Both zoos have known source tiger iltis. As my avatar demonstrates, I have already seen Marbled Polecat at the collection in questionso there is no need to hurry back *that* rapidly!
However, it is another reason why I definitely want to return to Berlin, and thus Magdeburg, at some point in 2018especially given the fact that (although listed as non-ssp on ZTL) I strongly suspect the Novosibirsk stock will be a different subspecies to that I have seen previously.
I visited Magdeburg yesterday and confirm that this new Elephant enclosure does feature both a house and new paddock. The house (named Africambo II) features some free-flying birds with in the house, these being Hamerkop, Abdim's Stork, Hadada Ibis and Cattle Egret. Side exhibits feature Rock Monitor, Banded Mongoose and Smith's Bush Squirrel. Both the latter 2 species have doors for which they can be released into the main house, although both were confined to their individual exhibits. The outdoor consists of 2 paddocks, a larger one which the 2 females had access too and a smaller one which I presume is the bull paddock. The outdoors is shared with 2 Impala and at a later date, the zoo's breeding group of Vervet Monkey which live in a neighbouring enclosure. The old Elephant house has now been closed to the public and the former outdoor paddock has been turned into a walk-through aviary featuring Ruppell's Griffon Vulture, Hooded Vulture, Palm Nut Vulture, Secretary Bird, Yellow Mongoose and Cape Porcupine. The opposite end of the Elephant house is now the location for the Gelada, Nubian Ibex and Rock Hyrax exhibit. I thought the exhibit was actually very good and is an improvement on the old exhibit. I will upload some images of the exhibit later. This new elephant enclosure seems to have gone under the radar a little. Is there a new house as well, or is it just an outdoor enclosure? And, from the little on the zoo's website, it sounds as if the two old animals are currently occupying what will, eventually, be a bull paddock. is that correct? Finally, is the development any good?
I have seen in zootierliste , that Magdeburg has Grandidier’s Vontsira. Do someone knows more about it ?
