Zoologischer Garten Magdeburg Magdeburg Zoo

Magdeburg has just imported 3.0 marbled polecat from Novosibirsk, next year females should follow, also from Novosibirsk but they will have to wait fro the next breeding season. One of the males is already visible next to the bobak marmots in one of their former enclosures.

And somewhere TLD is frantically cancelling frights to Belgium :p

As my avatar demonstrates, I have already seen Marbled Polecat at the collection in question :P so there is no need to hurry back *that* rapidly!

However, it is another reason why I definitely want to return to Berlin, and thus Magdeburg, at some point in 2018 :P especially given the fact that (although listed as non-ssp on ZTL) I strongly suspect the Novosibirsk stock will be a different subspecies to that I have seen previously.

Both zoos have known source tiger iltis.

Female black rhino Kumi (born 1995) was transferred to Magdeburg from Zoo Berlin a few days ago.

This new elephant enclosure seems to have gone under the radar a little. Is there a new house as well, or is it just an outdoor enclosure? And, from the little on the zoo's website, it sounds as if the two old animals are currently occupying what will, eventually, be a bull paddock. is that correct? Finally, is the development any good?
I visited Magdeburg yesterday and confirm that this new Elephant enclosure does feature both a house and new paddock. The house (named Africambo II) features some free-flying birds with in the house, these being Hamerkop, Abdim's Stork, Hadada Ibis and Cattle Egret. Side exhibits feature Rock Monitor, Banded Mongoose and Smith's Bush Squirrel. Both the latter 2 species have doors for which they can be released into the main house, although both were confined to their individual exhibits. The outdoor consists of 2 paddocks, a larger one which the 2 females had access too and a smaller one which I presume is the bull paddock. The outdoors is shared with 2 Impala and at a later date, the zoo's breeding group of Vervet Monkey which live in a neighbouring enclosure. The old Elephant house has now been closed to the public and the former outdoor paddock has been turned into a walk-through aviary featuring Ruppell's Griffon Vulture, Hooded Vulture, Palm Nut Vulture, Secretary Bird, Yellow Mongoose and Cape Porcupine. The opposite end of the Elephant house is now the location for the Gelada, Nubian Ibex and Rock Hyrax exhibit. I thought the exhibit was actually very good and is an improvement on the old exhibit. I will upload some images of the exhibit later.

Nubian giraffe Femke died when after complications of a stillbirth.

More positive news is that the first Nubian ibex has been born. This is the first time in approx. 15 years that this species has been bred in Germany.

Again, they used the minor bad luck of the zoo. Giraffe calf died, tragedy! In Africa, more than half of the giraffes do not live to maturity and they solve that the calf has died after birth. The fact that a giraffe gave birth to a dead calf and then died itself is an unfortunate event that happens to all animal species.

Zoo-Elefant reißt sich Rüsselspitze ab
The accident happened in Magdeburg.
Mwana, the only elephant cow in the Magdeburg Zoo, has pinched her trunk tip and pulled it off.
About the inches of her highly sensitive tactile organ are off ...
An animal keeper electrically opened one of the large hydraulic gates to let the elephant lady out ...
Mwana knows the procedure, otherwise it always stays behind with sufficient distance.
But that morning she was suddenly putting her trunk in a slot in the gate - and suddenly roared vigorously.

I wish her an early recovery and to learn to eat and drink again.

2 red bellied tamarins were born on April 6th. Last week, a blue-throated piping guan hatched. Also, a baby black lemur was born at the beginning of March to mother Charlotte. On March 3rd, two marabou stork chicks also hatched. On February 5th, a Darwin's rhea hatched and on late March, a scimitar horned oryx was also born.
