My 7 year old son is interested in rhinos and asked me to post this poll on Zoochat:

What is your favourite species of rhino?

I have a soft sport for all Asian species of rhino and for black rhinos.....for some reason just cannot get excited about white rhinos.

Maybe it the common as muck or that most chavy zoos keep them?

You're obviously not old enough to remember when they were regarded as rare and special. They are still amazing animals, and very different from the other species in that they are the only social rhinoceros, and the only specialist grazer.

I have to admit that I’m a bit intrigued by this. What do you think makes a zoo chavvy and which zoos do you consider to be chavvy?
I don't think Cotswold Wildlife Park or Whipsnade would like to be considered 'chavy' !? Marwell or Africa Alive probably not either .... One or 2 of the others maybe!

In one short post, this guy has managed to be offensive about unspecified zoos and a seriously impressive animal.

That's nonsense!
I was responding to Taun's post actually! He said 'most chavy zoos keep them'!
And I said nothing about Rhino!

Sorry, I was responding to the same post as you, Pipaluk! Unfortunately I quoted yours by mistake. Whoops.

I said I cannot get excited about them not that they are unimpressive.

And I said they are common as muck as in they are more common in zoos.

And what I consider chavvy zoos you tend to find white rhinos.

Just my opinion of white rhinos and some zoos. I am entitled to be more excited about some animals than others. Also entitled to describe some zoos chavvy as that is what I think best describes in my opinion. You might find it offensive and I a sorry you do but you can just ignore me (use the ignore feature, we still have that feature right?)

I have a soft spot for all Asian species of rhino......

I too have a “soft spot” for all species of Asian rhino.

I can understand why Indian rhinoceros is the current leader in the poll; an adult Indian rhino is an impressive beast.

However, having seen Sumatran rhinoceros in three separate collections, they are probably my favourite species. (I used to visit Port Lympne frequently when there were Sumatran rhinos there.)

Obviously, I’ve never seen Javan rhino (other than in museums) and, sadly, I’m sure I never will.
....for some reason just cannot get excited about white rhinos.

I’ve also a “soft spot” for northern white rhinos. London Zoo’s northern white rhino “Ben” was probably my very favourite individual zoo animal; I saw him literally hundreds of times. Having seen northern white rhinos in London, Antwerp, San Diego and Dvur Kralove it is a depressing thought that this form is doomed and I’ll never see another one….Tragic.

I agree with you. White rhino's dont get me as excited neither. They are pretty common around big zoos, something you cant say about the black or asian species. Even tho all rhino's are very interesting, white rhino's are in my opinion my least favorite.
