From what I read while following The Keeper Diaries on Facebook the original intention was for Minbu and Tara to travel in one crate and Noor Jahan and Esha in another, both transportation crates going to Blackpool together, which has not happened.I was pleased to see that Tara and Minbu's move was handled well including heating in the crates for the journey, both appeared to settle in at Blackpool almost straight away as if they had lived nowhere else, it must also be remembered that Tara had known nowhere else but Twycross, being born there in 1998.
 
From the Zoo Keeper Diaries on the website:

"Once the second crate arrive on site we will begin training with Minbu who will be travelling at the same time [as Tara]. The elephants will be given their own crate to train with, so they can get familiar with it and feel as comfortable as possible. After Tara and Minbu have been trained, Noorjahan and Esha will begin their training."

Later on it mentions that Noorjahan and Esha will be sharing a crate. "We have had some changes in how we approach Noorjahan and Esha’s training as they will eventually be sharing a crate."

The diaries make interesting reading about the entire moving process.

This is a fairly extraordinary accusation to be making, and one which I don't think should be made unless you have real evidence to suggest that this is a fair comment to make. I really don't think the management at Twycross will be doing anything of the sort that you suggest, and to imply that they are guilty of this sort of Barnum-esque chicanery is, I think, both unfair and a little dangerous.
 
You can think and say what you like, we are all entitled to our opinions are we not? I am interested in animal well being , with a special interest in elephants, the Twycross girls in particular.

Well, no, neither you nor I can do this, "Terry". Sorry. The laws of libel prevent us from making untrue and damaging comments about people. The laws of good manners prevent us from just slinging out allegations like this, when there appears to be no basis for them.

Which is really very noble of you, "Terry", but the implication that while you are interested in animal welfare, others (Twycross Zoo itself, other posters here who don't share your view of the world) are not is, quite frankly, just a little bit silly.

Quite - and also enters somewhat shaky legal ground where these claims about the motives of Twycross Zoo are concerned.

Regarding the elephants, yes of coarse we all know that all four will be going to Blackpool, and very pleased I am to see this, all four being kept together in this brand new facility which looks excellent from what images I have seen of it. However we know that, the elephants do not. Noor Jahan and Esha must be wondering what has happened to Minbu and Tara, I would have thought all four would have been there by now.

Could it not just be a simple delay. Remember the logistics concerned when moving elephants I would say are some of the most difficult and time consuming in captive animals. There may be delays from either side, just be patience moves take time.
 
Worth noting perhaps that while the Twycross elephants will be reunited as a group at Blackpool, under different circumstances they could just as easily have been split e.g. into pairs and sent to two different zoos. (Karishma moved alone to Whipsnade and is part of their herd now). So I think any discussion/critisism about any delay in them being re-united should be viewed with that in mind.

Is it not the case unfortunately that most captive elephants do this? I believe when we visited at the beginning of thr year all 4 elephants were inside and 3 out of the 4 were 'swaying'. Crate training can take longer than expected and plans have to be changed ie. Travelling in different crates this will be due to the health and wellbeing of the animals so i suspect twycross are doing the best they can regarding the animals. It may be worth contacting twycross with questions to ask when the remaining 2 elephants will be leaving if you or anyone else is concerned

Exactly right- I believe many Elephants 'sway' on occassion, when in more confined spaces, and it may not indicate undue stress particularly.

I think in response to questions about when the last two are leaving the zoo will simply say 'we don't know exactly but soon' (the same is given out about the Chimp opening)- they may genuinely not know anyway at present- then one day it will just happen.

Yes I remember very well when Karishma was sent to Whipsnade in 2006, she was supposed to be troublesome, Twycross broke the rules then by splitting up mother and daughter. As I posted above I am delighted and also very relieved that the four remaining elephants at Twycross are being kept together in this new facility at Blackpool, also on a very personal note this will enable myself to continue to visit them, and all four together at a zoo which I have always enjoyed visiting. Perhaps this slow transfer is related to a certain extent to elephants now being handled via protected contact, which I am in favour of but if they were still handled by free contact perhaps the movement could have been quicker. I recall when Gita, Aziza and Mya were moved to Whipsnade in 2002, all three were transfered almost together on the same day I recall, handled then of coarse by free contact.

I dont doubt you have seen something but until we can all see it for ourselves its difficult to be sure if it is a rule, guideline or suggestion. As a matter of good practice it is perhaps unwise to acuse anyone of breaking the "rules" if we don't have the "rules". No further comment needed.
