Per the zoo facebook page:
With very heavy hearts we announce the death of Naku, 17-year-old western lowland gorilla. On Friday, zookeepers noticed Naku was appearing more tired than normal and after 24 hours of non-stop observation and supportive care her condition warranted an exam, which resulted in the need for emergency surgery. Surgery showed a necrotic bowel and because of the prognosis, the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize her on Saturday.
We extend our appreciation to the network of professionals from around the country that assisted our veterinary experts, including veterinarians and pediatric physicians that worked tirelessly with our staff in the hope of bringing Naku through this difficult series of events. The priority for our dedicated animal care team continues to be the well-being of the family group, including caring for Naku’s baby, Zahra.
