Anyone been behind the scenes at their facility Lee Simmons Conservation Park? I want to see their herd of Gaur that's the largest in the country.
If I end up doing Omaha in October, I plan on doing the cheetah behind the scenes thing.

Are you going to the Conservation Park? I only asked because you can't find any reference to their gaur except from this article. If I end up doing Omaha in October, I plan on doing the cheetah behind the scenes thing.

Before I went to Zoo Miami in Nov 2016, I emailed him about the possibility of going on a behind the scenes tour with their Gaur but he never responded. I guess I should've called instead? That would be my plan; the last cheetah weekend is October 20-21 so I'd go then. The only issue would be having a rental car in a drive through area... Now that I know I can travel that week, Omaha is looking more likely as where I'll end up, but there's several other places I'm looking at as well.
Do you think they still have them? The person in charge of their SSP is now Joshua Patrick, from Zoo Miami, and I know the zoo no longer keeps them. Joel Sartore's gaur photos were taken there, but he doesn't date his photos so who knows when they were taken.
I'm currently considering contacting Omaha and seeing if I could set up something with the bats.
What? Like a "Face Your Fear" workshop or something?![]()
...but I managed to see some!!! It ended up being a small viewing window and I only saw 2 or 3 bats...
I almost turned around a few times but I was determined to do it. I pretended I belonged to the family in front of me and that when they were talking to their baby and telling her everything was safe, they were talking to me, tooBut it worked.

Thank you!!! I guess they went to San Diego or one of those large breeding ranches down in Texas or maybe they're headed to the Special Survival Center in new Orleans. The only zoos I know of that still have them is Bronx, San Diego, Miami and Gladys Porter. Parc Safari in Quebec got the remaining Toronto Gaur. AZA is prioritizing Banteng, Anoa and Savanna Buffalo. I'm surprised cuz they had the largest breeding herd at like 60 head at Lee Simmons. I understand that AZA zoos need more holders for GOH rhinos but Gaur are the last living species of wild cattle comparable to the extinct Aurochs. I hope zoos can have more of them in the future. with the population in South India rising they are a great candidate for showcasing human wild/animal conflicts. How was your tour? I'll upload my Omaha photos at some point sooner than later.I asked about them for you, they no longer keep gaur since the zoo no longer keeps them, either. The 4 keepers/employees I spent time with don't really deal with hoofstock so don't know where they went.
