Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo What are ALL the mammals Omaha Zoo CURRENTLY have?

Anyone been behind the scenes at their facility Lee Simmons Conservation Park? I want to see their herd of Gaur that's the largest in the country.

If I end up doing Omaha in October, I plan on doing the cheetah behind the scenes thing.

Are you going to the Conservation Park? I only asked because you can't find any reference to their gaur except from this article.

That would be my plan; the last cheetah weekend is October 20-21 so I'd go then. The only issue would be having a rental car in a drive through area... Now that I know I can travel that week, Omaha is looking more likely as where I'll end up, but there's several other places I'm looking at as well.

Do you think they still have them? The person in charge of their SSP is now Joshua Patrick, from Zoo Miami, and I know the zoo no longer keeps them. Joel Sartore's gaur photos were taken there, but he doesn't date his photos so who knows when they were taken.

Before I went to Zoo Miami in Nov 2016, I emailed him about the possibility of going on a behind the scenes tour with their Gaur but he never responded. I guess I should've called instead?

Probably! There's that fine line between showing you're seriously interested and being annoying, and I tend to be on the cautious side, as well. I'm currently considering contacting Omaha and seeing if I could set up something with the bats.

What? Like a "Face Your Fear" workshop or something? :p

Exactly ;) I haven't written my Maryland Zoo review for last weekend yet, but I managed to see some!!! It ended up being a small viewing window and I only saw 2 or 3 bats, but I had to go through a cave with a winding path, narrow walkways, stalactites and stalagmites, etc to get there. I almost turned around a few times but I was determined to do it. I pretended I belonged to the family in front of me and that when they were talking to their baby and telling her everything was safe, they were talking to me, too :D But it worked.

Fantastic news, bats are awesome animals, and are a delight to watch as well! :)

Hey, whatever you had to do it certainly worked. I can see you'll be ambling right past them in diurnal exhibits in no time! :D :D

I think I still have a ways to go before I'm walking through a free flight exhibit ;) But I'm proud of myself! Part of my brain knows it's a really stupid fear but the other half is still working on agreeing.

I asked about them for you, they no longer keep gaur since the zoo no longer keeps them, either. The 4 keepers/employees I spent time with don't really deal with hoofstock so don't know where they went.
Thank you!!! I guess they went to San Diego or one of those large breeding ranches down in Texas or maybe they're headed to the Special Survival Center in new Orleans. The only zoos I know of that still have them is Bronx, San Diego, Miami and Gladys Porter. Parc Safari in Quebec got the remaining Toronto Gaur. AZA is prioritizing Banteng, Anoa and Savanna Buffalo. I'm surprised cuz they had the largest breeding herd at like 60 head at Lee Simmons. I understand that AZA zoos need more holders for GOH rhinos but Gaur are the last living species of wild cattle comparable to the extinct Aurochs. I hope zoos can have more of them in the future. with the population in South India rising they are a great candidate for showcasing human wild/animal conflicts. How was your tour? I'll upload my Omaha photos at some point sooner than later.

The keeper thinks they would have stayed within AZA, they don't interact with others unless it's a major rescue thing or something, but she didn't want to guess where they went since she wasn't that familiar with them. Being the end of the season, the place was lower staffed and she wasn't sure who to ask about them. I saw them very briefly at the Bronx... I wish the monorail animals were viewable from foot as well, there are several I would have liked to spend more time with there.

My tour was AMAZING. I'm not supposed to talk about it on social media, but feel free to PM me if you'd like details :)
