ZooChat Challenge (Global) 2018

This also brings the very disappointing announcement that Magdeburg's Marsh Mongoose are currently behind the scenes and due to leave the zoo imminently for an unknown collection.

Disappointing enough for you :p imagine how I feel having missed the species at both Zie-zoo and Magdeburg due to it being off-display!

Made a misstake in counting ( I've number 40 2 times so I'm actualy now at 45 species. Last weekend I however visited Ouwehand and could add 3 more species to the list :
46 ) Brown bear - Ursus arctos ( see Brown bear | ZooChat )
47 ) Giant panda - Ailuropoda melanoleuca ( see Giant panda | ZooChat )
48 ) Clouded leopard - Neofelis nebulosa

Visited two of the 3 main collections in Belgium on Friday and Saterday and althrough they had both nice collections of carnivores only 1 new species for the challenge, at Antwerp Zoo :
49 ) Spectacled bear - Tremarctos ornatus ( see Young Andean bear | ZooChat )

At Pairi Daiza I had the possibility to add the Giant otter but because I missed it on my first round and run out of time on the second tour, this species has to wait to become part of the list of species seen this year :( .

Chengdu Zanhuayuan Zoo, Friday August 17th

88) Striped skunk, Mephitis mephitis
89) Hog badger, Arctonyx collaris
90) Chinese ferret-badger, Melogale moschata

91) Large indian civet, Viverra zibetha
92) Small-toothed palm civet, Arctogalidia trivirgata
93) Crab-eating mongoose, Herpestes urva
94) Spotted linsang, Prionodon pardicolor

Worth noting that the next day was Chengdu Zoo, which marked the first time this year that I visited a 'true zoo' and didn't pick up a new carnivore. Can't really complain though ;)

Changlong Ocean Kingdom, Monday September 10th

95) Walrus, Odobenus rosmarus
96) Bearded seal, Erignathus barbatus

That genuinely might be it for the year, just a boundary short of my ton. If so, a surprise lifer, and a much-wanted one at that, is a nice way to go out.

Erlebnis-Zoo Hannover
85) Northern Fur Seal Callorhinus ursinus

Berlin Zoo
86) Sloth Bear Melursus ursinus
87) Brown Fur Seal Arctocephalus pusillus

Tierpark Berlin
88) Asian Palm-Civet Paradoxurus hermaphroditus
89) Malayan Civet Viverra tangalunga
90) Sunda Leopard Cat Prionailurus javanensis
91) Dhole Cuon alpinus

Wildpark Connewitz
92) European Pine Marten Martes martes
93) Beech Marten Martes foina

Magdeburg Zoo
94) Marbled Polecat Vormela peregusna
95) Yellow Mongoose Cynictis penicillata
96) Common Cusimanse Crossarchus obscurus

...

As successful as these past few days have been, I've also managed to miss six planned species from the various zoos above. This also brings the very disappointing announcement that Magdeburg's Marsh Mongoose are currently behind the scenes and due to leave the zoo imminently for an unknown collection.

I think given how consistently this rule has been upheld it is fair to ask that you include scientific names as well.

Visited Zoo Duisburg and Zoo Krefeld last week and this should give me 4 more species for the 2018-challenge but...... the Wolverine at Duisburg didn't wanted to show him/her/it self and at Krefeld I had hoped to see the Eurasian river otter ( after missing it on my visit earlier this year ) but after seeing their enclosure ( see Enclosure Eurasian river otter - under construction | ZooChat ) I lost all hope and guess I have to visit another collection which also keeps this species to get it on my 2018-list.
The other 2 species were both at Duisburg and afther missing the Giant river otter at Pairi Daiza a few days before, I now saw a group of very active animals in and next to Rio Negro. The other species - the European wild cat was a little more tricky and was hidding quite well in a tree-trunk and althrough taking photos of it was impossible, I at least saw it so :

50 ) Giant river otter - Pteronura brasiliensis ( see Giant river otter | ZooChat )
51 ) European wild cat - Felis silvestris

Unfortunately I really do think this will be the end of my year. There's really only one or two more species I think I can realistically get at this point but I doubt I'll be getting to those collections. I was hoping to get to at least 120 but, even with species I missed on this trip, I'd only be at 118 so I'd have to really have pushed. Maybe I should have allowed Dasyurids after all... In any case I look forward to @Giant Eland promptly stealing away my otherwise ensured victory (maybe I should ban him?).

~Thylo

As expected I picked up no other new species in the UK (my visits there were based more around other animals) and I'm not back home in Connecticut.
