Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion, Speculation & Questions 2018

Talking about the idea of netting for the flamingoes as some fun speculation in the headline news thread, how tall would the netting ideally be? Part of me say a good 5-8 metres for flying space but I wonder if flamingoes would even use that?

Flamingos dont fly in aviaries so height is irrelevant for them.

I cant imagine how long and breight an aviary would have to be for flamingos to actively fly inside of it. These birds need long distance to start and gain hight (or help of wind), they are not very acrobatic but fly with high speed (travelling long-distance speed can be over 70 km/h).

Hope this is ok to post into here but I believe this is big news. Nandita the Asian elephant celebrates her 3rd birthday today so becomes the 1st elephant and female to survive since Sundara & Tunga (both born 2004) and celebrate this milestone. Happy Birthday Nandita!!!!

Not to rain on your parade but still early days. Herpes virus tends to strike between ages 2 and 6 (I have read). So a few more years before she is in the clear.

I understand that and like you said until Nandita reaches 5/6yrs old I know she is still susceptible, but my post means that she is the first since 2007 at Chester to celebrate her 3rd birthday. This is still a huge milestone in Chester zoo`s elephant herd. Fingers x this continues.

Absolutely its well worth celebrating - plus Nandita is a little star! Hope she has many, many more years ahead of her.

Nayan (July 2010 to July 2013) was three when he died. Only by a couple of weeks but he still reached that milestone..

Am heading to Chester Zoo on Sunday - I'm going with my family so may not be able to concentrate massively on gathering info, but is there anything that anyone would like me to try and spot, or info to find out etc????

Has anyone ever actually seen the Sand Lizards at Chester (Near the Jaguars and Lemur). I don't mean if you've had a behind the scenes tour, or a VIP day or friends work there and you've got close up or anything, I mean during a normal visit. I much have spent hours outside that exhibit wanting to see one, camera at ready but nope not a thing. I swear it's just an empty grassy sandy enclosure lol.
Yes we have spotted them a couple of times.

I should be visiting Chester this week. Any tips on best times to see the Sun Bear cub from anyone who has seen her? I'm thinking of doing Islands last as thats the part of the zoo where some of the species I most want to see are, but accept that its a bit of a gamble.

She was out for most of the morning last Wednesday - I think the earlier the better is probably your best bet.

She was curled up asleep in a log yesterday morning.

We've just returned from a visit on Sun/Mon and we saw the sun bear cub active first thing, about 11:30am and between 16:00-17:00. The late session was easily the best as Millie had been given a scatter of fruit and the little bear was trying to get in on the action (climbing up a post to get to the melon). We saw her every time we tried to so fingers crossed you will too @Sand Cat

Cub showing well between 2.30 and 4-ish today (well, except around 3.30 when keepers were doing a scatter feed ;) - but as soon as the den door opened Millie came out, quickly followed by the cub). She really is very cute.

The keepers vary the times of the afternoon scatter feed. It was about 4.25 pm yesterday, which was very nice as there were not too many visitors about. The Blast! cameralady said that the cub had been very active earlier in the afternoon too, but both mother and cub were dozing in the corner between 10.30 and 11 in the morning.
