Movie review rant 2018

I've not seen the original Hellboy movies
Then maybe you should watch them if you have the opportunity. They're good, even though they have little in common with the extensive Hellboy comic universe.
Both the MIB4 and Hellboy remake trailer leave me remarkably indifferent to watch these movies; but maybe I'm just not the target audience.

Mary Poppins Returns
Rating: 8/10
I just saw this movie and I enjoyed it a good amount. It's certainly not my favorite movie ever but then again I'm not exactly its target audience. I'd consider it one of those "feel-good" movies. The music was really nice and I like how they returned to 2D animation for a certain part. If you have kids I recommend you take them to see this movie as my younger sibling particularly enjoyed it. My only real complaint was it was about some rip off Mary Poppins. I thought it was going to feature the true Mary Poppins:

My favorite scene was either...
...the bath tub scene or Vick Van Dike dancing.

Spider-Man:Into The Spiderverse

So I took my daughter to watch this earlier and all I can say is WOW! It is a brilliant movie in every way, and it's not just for nerds either but has enough geek-out moments to keep even the most hardcore comic book fan occupied.
The story centres around Miles Morales and his take on the titular hero but features several other Spider-Man incarnations as well, my personal favourite being Spider-Man Noir, played by Nicolas Cage. Being a noir character means he can only see in black and white, which leads to my favourite scene in the movie! ;) But other Spider-Persons include Peter Porker aka Spider-Ham; Peni Parker and her robot, who ar both drawn anime style, and fan favourites Peter Parker (x2) and Spider-Gwen. All have their own unique styles, and in some cases animation, and all bring something different to the table. The animation is superb all round as well, truly gives the sense of reading a comic.

Don't want to say anymore about the plot but I will recommend this to anyone, regardless of age or interest in the character. A solid 9 out of 10.

I really enjoyed it. One of the unique things about comic book superheroes is that there is the willingness and ability to create lots of different versions of characters, and it's pretty cool to have a movie that celebrates that. It had a unique animation style that gives more of a comic book feel. I liked Spider Noir too, really fun to have a character from such a different type of word, and I don't want to make this weird but did anyone else find him sexy? And you could feel the feels in the theater when the Stan Lee cameo came. It wasn't just him doing a silly joke, it was a sweet, touching moment that hits harder now that he's gone.

Anyway, I saw Aquaman last night. I enjoyed it, though admittedly I didn't go in with high expectations. It didn't take itself TOO seriously like other DC movies have a problem with, and it had some fun and creativity with the visuals. I'm also super biased in favor of stories that take place underwater. More stories should take place underwater.

Just curious, what exactly was the issue that caused DC to change Captain Marvel's name to Shazam? Obviously Marvel has their own Captain Marvel, but DC's came first. So why did DC have to change the name?

I always assume it was just less hassle for them, especially as Marvel's Captain Marvel got more prominent.

Aquaman is probably the DC film I enjoyed the most (I haven't see Wonder Woman yet by the way). It was fun, it has stunning visuals and the plot had some nice surprises. Black Manta was underused though, but then again he was not the main villain.

The moment that Orm threw all the junk people once dumped into the ocean back on land was a bit weird. If that was an option all along, why didn't they use it earlier to teach people it is not okay to dump waste into the sea. Also, if one rides a Mosasaur (?), it needs to breath air right? Or does it possess the same abilities as the Atlantians?

Aquaman ... has stunning visuals
Just to be clear, are these different "visuals" from what is shown in the trailers? Because the CGI in the trailers looked like they hired a chimp to smash its fists upon a keyboard.

Also, you should see Wonder Woman.

I'm mostly referring to a few scenes further into the movie which I liked, but I agree that the CGI is not always that great or realistic.

Also, you should see Wonder Woman.

I know I should.

Yeah, the trash thing bugged me a lot. Save a lot of trouble if ya just did that all along. I guess they were trying to keep themselves hidden, but I don't think people would immediately suspect Atlantis. Also, they've had super technology for thousands of years, it's not like they'd be defenseless against surface world attacks. So why stay hidden? At least with Wakanda, it was a small country and they saw other African nations being exploited and harmed by colonization.

ALSO, same problem I have with Captain Planet: they have this clean super energy source, if they shared it with the surface world it would majorly reduce oceanic pollution and that would be super helpful. Well, that could probably be explained by fearing war from the surface world, don't wanna share your military tech.

Subjectively I preferred Aquaman to Wonder Woman, but objectively WW is probably the superior movie.

I have a question about Aquaman though...
Was it ever explained how the submarine the fired at Orm's army at the beginning of the movie even new about the Atlantians existence? Afterall I thought the surface people weren't suppose to know about the underwater people? So why did the sub shot missiles at them? (Also, fyi the "mosasaur" is suppose to be a Tylosaurus, which is a genus also belonging to the Mosasauridae family)

I've yet to understand why WW is supposed to be a good film. Both my wife and I considered it dull and predictable.
I just finished watching "The Shape of Water". Now that was a peculiar, yet strangely entertaining movie! Even though I don't understand why no doctor or nurse inspected those gangrenous fingers. The Surf & Turf steaks looked nice.

That's why I said "probably." I think it is an okay movie, but definitely nothing special. I said that because everyone else seems think it is some miracle. (Truth be told I think most people like it so much simply because it's a female superhero; for the record I'm not saying that female superheros are bad I'm just saying that had we been given the EXACT same movie, but with a male lead, people wouldn't of like it as much)

I’m a bit worried for Captain Marvel as I think it’s going to be a mediocre movie like Black Panther but it will get high raitings because of political commentary (like Black Panther). The trailers don’t really ease my thoughts and I hope the movie is just a cool superherorine shooting lasers at aliens and not what I think at going to be...

I’ve actually been watching a ton of movies I’ve missed in 2018. So far I’ve seen Crazy Rich Asians, Venom, and Alpha. I think all of these movies have some good aspects to them with Crazy Rich Asians being the first romantic comedy I actually enjoyed (Then again maybe I should watch more romantic comedies). Venom was a good movie and I laughed at the scenes that had some errors (there’s a part in the movie when Eddie enters a store during the day and when he’s inside, you can see that it’s nightime through the window). The woman actor for that movie was as stale as five week old bread though and I wish they brought someone who has more of a personality (not trying to be mean just a suggestion). Alpha was a cute dog movie but my zoo nerd powers kicked in when a sabertooth cat appeared in Europe. Besides that the movie was nice and the effort can be seen. The language in the movie was made up by linguists which I though was cool. I’m going to watch both the Meg and the Death of Stalin soon and I hope both are able to make me laugh as much as the other movies I’ve seen.

I'm not excited for Captain Marvel in the slightest. I want to see it, but it feels like an obligation tan a choice, and I will have to watch it at the cinema because it won't be out before Endgame. I feel like I'm being conned! :(

And to weigh in on the BP/WW debate; Both films opened to rave reviews which made me excited for two movies I wasn't bothered about. I should have stuck with my original outlook on both, I wouldn't have been as disappointed. ;) I enjoyed both films, neither blew me away, and I didn't understand why either were being heralded as ground breaking for portrayals of female or black superheroes. I just thought they were CBM films based on the source material. You couldn't have a male Wonder Woman or a white Black Panther, well not when you're being true to the source material.

There's no obligation to waste money on such a movie in the cinema @Brum; just wait for the relevant CinemaSins episode to come out afterwards. ;)

The only problem with that is Captain Marvel comes out too close to Endgame, and I get the feeling certain plot elements will carry over. Unless CinemaSins manage to lay their hands on a time machine or a bootleg copy then I'm going to have to pay... :(;)

Hm? I don't remember seeing any other sabertooth cat in the movie that the one that appear suddenly in the night fire and catch an human of the tribe. It's more like a big brown shade during half second, that could be from an oversized hyena to a very speedy small brown bear, just I assumed that is a sabertooth cat. How can you jugde the size of the teeth with this quick blur? Are some extended version of movie with sabertooth cats or maybe just I didn't paid enough attention in moment when other cats appeared?
