The EU/Brexit vote and zoos

I had said I wouldn't prod the fire of Brexit, but ... just on a point of accuracy, the UK government is negotiating with the European Commission, not the European Parliament.

We are all entitled to our own opinions. But we are not entitled to our own facts.

Point of accuracy taken - substitute the word Parliament for Commission, and my point still stands. Both are equally remote, unaccountable and arrogant. For the briefest of moments I forgot that we were all paying for two extra layers of bureaucrats, over and above the shower that sit in London...

I don't really want to start a debate on Brexit (plenty of them elsewhere on the interweb) but worth pointing out that those EEP participants outside the EU will have their own agreements with the EU on the relevant issues (e.g. health, welfare standards, customs documentation). The UK has still to negotiate any such agreements - if/when we leave with No Deal (which, potentially, is just 22 days away) there will be no agreements in place.

I think that this is the fear that the zoos (both EU and UK) have: until there is an agreement, it might be difficult to transfer animals. And after the agreement, it might cost much more time to arrange all the paperwork. We have these experiences with BALAI, where the UK was years ahead of most other EU countries with implementing this regulation, and it became for zoos of some countries almost impossible to exchange animals with the UK. It was terrible for coordinators of EEPs, who sometimes had to base their recommendations on this, and not on genetics, characters of animals or needs of zoos.

Brexit id finished. We will either end up back in the EU as full members or have a second class membership like Norway but it's finished.

Unfortunately if nothing is agreed by April 12th then according to the EU we will leave on April 13th with a no deal

Assuming the UK leaves without a deal, the politicians in the house of Commons are wholly to blame.Theyhave had two years to sort something out.

According to the MP's it's not there fault but they agree with the remoaners that the fault lies with the people who voted leave.
All MP's should sit down and look at themselves and resign as they promised they would honour the result (as long as it was remain) and they have NOT
This mess firmly lies with the MP's and nobody else no matter what twisted they put on it and come the next General Election I hate to think how the British People will vote after this pathetic sham issue.

Are a lot of people over there still in favor of Brexit, or has the public turned against it?

It remains a relatively even split (although as TLD asks, it depends who you listen to). Firm believers on both sides have only become more polarised since 2016. That said, the picture's complicated somewhat by:
  1. 2016 Brexiteers who now would prefer to remain;
  2. 2016 Remainers who believe Brexit must be implemented; and
  3. People who were swing voters in 2016 and now just want the issue to be resolved, irrespective of what this solution actually is.

The scaremongering continues; drip, drip...
EAZA and its EEPs and other programmes are not confined to the EU. To suggest so is simply untrue. Participants take part in these programmes from outside the EU, and indeed outside EAZA...

It's not scaremongering. It's simply pointing out that around 20% of the European population is in the UK and that if the UK leaves without an agreement this could result in additional requirements (and costs) when transferring into/out of the UK. Which would make transfer more difficult.

Yes, countries outside the EU participate in EAZA EEPs but using existing agreements (veterinary etc.) which the UK would not have in the event of a no-deal brexit.

Again, quite untrue. EEPs have NO veterinary agreements. Veterinary movement requirements are put in place by DEFRA, have nothing whatsoever to do with EAZA or EEPs, and make no dispensation for EEP species.
