ZooChat Big Year 2019

An unusual set of species to get on the same day :p

BIRDS
229 - Spangled Drongo (Dicrurus bracteatus)

230 - Shy Albatross (Thalassarche cauta)

FISH
14 - Southern Fiddler Ray (Trygonorrhina dumerilii)
Are spangled drongos rare in your area?
Birds:
94. Green Catbird (Ailuroedus crassirostris)
95. Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus)
96. White winged Triller (Lalage tricolor)
Birds:
96. Whistling Kite (Haliastur sphenurus)

Just realised I listed Spilopelia chinensis twice under two different common names, so my total remains at 96.

Mixed luck at Tamri but did end up getting three new species including a nice lifer!

24/04/2019 (Tamri Estuary)
BIRDS:
93 - Common ringed plover, Charadrius hiaticula
94 - Dunlin, Calidris alpina

INVERTEBRATES:
14 - Speckled wood, Pararge aegeria

Just noticed I forgot to list Great comorant which is a species I've seen a while ago and see often so I should be on 95 instead of 94.

To increase the total a bit, I spent 3 hours in Souss-Massa National Park on the 1st of May and as usual what a delight it was!

27/04/2019 (Issen)
HERPS:
3 - Berber toad, Sclerophrys mauritanica

01/05/2019 (Oued Massa Estuary & Réserve Animalière de Roukeïn)
BIRDS:
96 - Little owl, Athene noctua
97 - Sanderling, Calidris alba
98 - Short-toed snake-eagle, Circaetus gallicus
99 - Barbary partridge, Alectoris barbara
100 - Booted eagle, Hieraaetus pennatus

Also noteworthy is that all three lifers were very high on my list and all are relatively common species in my area but that I had kept on missing before that day and also that said day I registered my highest species total during a birding session at 47 species in 3 hours which is quite good, in my opinion.

Birds
98. Merlin Falco columbarius
99. House Wren Troglodytes aedon

Fishes
2. Lake Sturgeon Acipenser fulvescens

Inverts
5. Mourning Cloak Nymphalis antiopa
6. American Lady Vanessa virginiensis
7. Cabbage White Pieris rapae

103. Purple Martin Progne subis
104. Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher Polioptila caerulea
105. Palm Warbler Setophaga palmarum
106. Yellow Warbler Setophaga petechia

Also a heard-only Sora, which would have been a lifer had I seen it.

One from a while ago I forgot about:

Birds
107. Common Loon Gavia immer

Don't really have a story for these two, however the rook is a lifer species for me.

31. Great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus)
32. Rook (Corvus frugilegus)

Birds:
33. Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita)

Birds
109. Nashville Warbler Oreothlypis ruficapilla
110. Green Heron Butorides virescens
111. Black-And-White Warbler Mniotilta varia
112. Common Yellowthroat Geothlypis trichas
113. American Redstart Setophaga ruticilla
114. Swainson's Thrush Catharus ustulatus
After this morning's warbler bonanza, I had to decide what to do for the rest of the day. I thought about doing something productive, but went "ah, screw it" and went birding at a local spot known for waterbirds. I didn't expect any year list birds, but I got some anyway :):

Birds
115. Gray Catbird Dumetella carolinensis
116. Warbling Vireo Vireo gilvus
117. Bank Swallow Riparia riparia

A post will soon be on the movie review rant thread about what I did after that.

55) Little Black Shag Phalacrocorax sulcirostris in Wellington Harbour earlier today.

Last year I only made it to 57 birds for the year, so I'm almost there (i.e. almost done for the year...)
