ZooChat Challenge North America 2020

B. The Armenian Mouflon are bts at SDZSP so they wouldn't count either, however I think Metro Richmond keeps them so they would be the only zoo where Mouflon can be counted.
~Thylo
Are Armenian Mouflon ovis oreanatlis gmelini? I think High Park Zoo had it signed as just oreantalis so I guess it doesn’t count. I checked ICUN to make sure and they said Mouflon counted but I guess they just meant the Armenian sub-species.

Why are amphibians hard to keep track of? I would say they are easier then reptiles. (It's worth noting that reptiles are my main problem with this challenge now that fish aren't in it - a big reptile house with poor signage would be a nightmare to go through).

I just figured people might not want to keep track of them again honestly. As far as reptiles go, with only 138 eligible taxa (many of which most people won't see anyhow) could one not just print out the master list and check them off as they visited a zoo? That could be a good way to do it for all of the groups actually. Maybe Jay could make an actual checklist if that'd be helpful?

I believe @lintworm is referring to more recent studies that found that the European ssp of Mouflon is actually a feral population descended from once semi-domesticated sheep, and therefore the only population in zoos which could count are the Armenian animals. I don't think the IUCN has updated the taxonomy for the species, though. That said, are we not counting Dingos? I know we did for the 2018 Global carnivore challenge. If they do count here, then I'd argue that European Mouflon should as well.

Going back to the initial post, though, are the Reindeer at High Park actual Caribou or Domestic Reindeer? I'd imagine the domesticated varieties won't count here.

~Thylo

E. I fail to see how having to keep track of the IUCN Redlist is considered to be more work than the current topic in the ZooChat Cup which requires us all to have to research which specific biome(s) every individual species at every remaining zoo naturally belongs to....

~Thylo

I’m reluctant to get too far into this here, because a) I’m satisfied with the work Jay has put into making this challenge more workable, have no further comments and look forward to seeing how it plays out, and b) talking about the Cup is off-topic here. I do feel a need to respond to this, though.

The simple answer is that it doesn’t require that. One of the hopes I had when moving beyond strict taxonomic categories and towards more subjective ones is that it would encourage more debate that wasn’t narrowly defined by species lists.

You’re free to make your own judgment - with or without looking it up, really - about whether to factor a species into your thinking, and it’s up to you how much effort you put into that. It’s only if challenged on an individual species that you need to be able to provide an external source. I also think 99% of species are going to be intuitive anyway.

I never said constructive criticism couldn't be done aggressively. :D

I started off the challenge today at the Audubon Aquarium and Audubon Insectarium. All of the species listed were at the aquarium as the insectarium had nothing that would count for this challenge.

1. Golden Poison Frog, Phyllobates terribilis
2. Sea Otter, Enhydra lutris
3. Green Sea Turtle, Chelonia mydas
4. Hyacinth Macaw, Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus
6. African Penguin, Spheniscus demersus
After visiting the Audubon Aquarium and Insectarium, I headed over to the Audubon Zoo where I saw.

Had to be at the zoo today so I hopefully was able to get a bit of a head start. This is absolutely not a full list, poor weather conditions kept a lot of animals indoors. But it's not as if I won't be back here ever. Species have been cross-referenced with the IUCN database, status is noted after the scientific name.

Ah, so it’s back on exhibit then? I was sad to miss it last year when it was temporarily offshow.

Mhm, they were moved to a mixed exhibit with dyeing poison dart frogs and mimic poison frogs a couple months ago. Anthony's poison arrow frogs now occupy their former exhibit.

I don't expect to get huge hauls like this from now on, between Brookfield and Fort Worth I gained easily over 70 new species. But it'll be interesting to see what else ends up added to my list.
