Knowsley Safari Park Knowsley Safari Park

Good about the new house, the bug house can get very crouded at times. Where will the Spotted Hyhenas be, do you know.

Nice to hear about the walk around area aswell. I'd like to see the giraffes get a bigger enclosure though. I suppose you didnt hear about any species did you.
Don`t know where the Hyenas will go but it was sounding very much as a done deal with the ESB stud book holder that they would get them,as for the Giraffes their are no plans to move them or hold any more, they are not broinging in a female and are prepared just to hold 3 males as the house would need major changes to hold a female in their.

I presume that the Hyenas would go in the second reserve caged where the other carnivores are kept, i doubt they would be a drive through exhibit. A couple of years ago, they opened up the wallaby/fallow deer reserve, but it just seemed a waste of time really, all the animals were too spread out, and the area just looked untidy.

When i did work experience there 2 years ago, they were saying that there was talk of getting more tigers in (probably Amur to free up space in other UK zoo's for Sumatrans), and i presume they would have gone where the old Bongo house used to be at (just as you drive into the carnivore reserve)

Re: Wildebeest in rhino area: The main herd often segregate individuals out, and constantly fight with them, so the keepers have no alternative but to place them in the rhino reserve. Any news on anymore rhino calves?

Didnt see any Fallow Deer, Nilgai or Congo Buffalo, are the species still kept at the park.

Yup, all present and correct yesterday - good-sized herds of Fallow and Nilgai and a good half-dozen Congo Buffalo.

Thanks for clearing that up. I knew the Buffalo would still be there with the species being new and all the inddor housing. Probablt missed the deer because we didnt go into the baboon reserve and therefore didnt drive strait through the middle of the East Africa Reserve. How i managed to miss a big Nilgai herd is beyond me:p

How are things on the elephant front at Knowsley, is Nissim mating any of the cows yet? Are there anymore rhino cows in calve?

Also, have there been any recommendations to where the lion cubs born last Easter will go to, i know there were 2 males and a female, and i presume the female will stay in the pride?

A female white rhino calf was born earlier this month to Winnie. It has been called 'Cara' A third calf is due before the end of the year.

Thanx,
Here is 3 brain crushers for you:
Who was the lucky first and when (and to which female)?
When was the 2nd female calf born exactly?
Who is the 3rd pregnant female?

And 3 more:
Where did the 11/2005 born female Binta (mother Piglet) go?
Where did the 9/2006 born female (mother Winnie) go?
How did the male born 4/2006 to mother Meru hold up?

Ouch, much obliged if you crack these!

The first calf was 'Flannery' born to Meru. He was born on 28th July in the rhino paddock. He was given the odd name after a St Helen's rugby player that sponsor the safari park.

The 2nd calf was born on 7th October

The third female pregnant is Piglet

Binta the calf born in 2005 is staying at the park for breeding with another male 'Sharka' I think the female born to Winnie in 2006 died? I haven't seen her at the park, and the park keeps all of their female rhinos. The male calf born to Meru in 2006 'Kifaru' is still at the park at the moment, but i think is will be due to leave next year as the park moves on male rhino's when they reach 3 years old.

The third white rhino calf (in 5 months) has been born at the safari park. The male calf was born to Piglet and is being kept in until the spring.

The Knowsley herd now has 10 individuals (5 male and 5 female)

Kept inside the rhino house because of the cold weather. They did the same with Binta when she was born in Nov 2005

recent births at the park

9 Pere Davids deer
1 axis deer
4 meerkat
1 olive baboon

I saw on ISIS that there are still six females African Elephants at the park so would any of you UK guys know if they intend to find another bull?

They do have a bull Mark , he is listed in ISIS under East African Bush elephant . He was captive bred , I think in Israel , and arrived at a young age , not certain if he is as yet mature enough to breed .

The previous Knowsley breeding bull , Kruger , is now at Port Lympne with two females from the Howletts herd , though I am not aware of any successful mating yet . One reason for his moving could be that there are two of his daughters at Knowsley .

When i was at the safari park with university, a keeper told me that 'Nissim' the male had come into his first musth, and attempted to mate one of the females, but failed. They hope that he will have more of a clue sometime next year when he goes through his next musth

As for Kruger at Port Lympne, i was told (my a keeper at Knowsley 2 weeks ago) that he had in fact mated with one of the females there (didn't mention the name of the female though)

Intresting i didn`t think he had been mixed with the females,at least thats the impression i got when i visited early in the year.
