South Lakes Wild Animal Park 30 lemur deaths

That's really tragic, poor lemurs :(

wow, thats shocking, reminds me of paigntons fire a while back but this is very serious

It reminds me of the Philly Zoo Primate House fire that happened on Christmas eve some years back, 23 animals killed:six gorillas, three orangs, four gibbons and ten lemurs including ringtail, mongoose and ruffed.

Oh no! That's terrible! So sad:(

Its is sad but when you build your animal house out of WOOD its a very real danger,at least the Belted Ruffed Lemurs where saved, the Blacks and White-fronteds will be a big loss for their species.

Here is an AZA communique article about what the philadelphia zoo has done to possibly prevent animal deaths in the event the houses were to catch fire...

i was just thinking that over in my mind, how did they save the belted lemurs, chase them out?
Suspect they wouldn`t have needed much chasing out animals are normally alot quicker at working out something is wrong than us Humans,so they probably shot out into the trees where they would be alot safer.

i was under the impression they were locked in for the night?

Tragic loss of Lemurs

Regarding the tragic loss of several , over 30 lemurs at South Lakes , apparently they lost 15 Ring-tails , 16 Red Ruffed and some White Fronted and Black Lemurs . 13 were saved by David Gills efforts , a faulty electric heater is thought to be the cause of the fire. Ironically the animals would not normally have been confined overnight. So sad. Zupu.

we stopped locking our primates in at night when we lost 2 caps and a troop of vervets in a fire in 1995. Their indoor enclousre was brick built. Such a terrible shame, I really feel for the keepers.

awh, thats very thoughtful. Poor man having to deal with a fire and his wife giving birth!
