A new world - lintworm in the USA

President Trump has just blocked travel between Europe and America for the next 30 days as a precaution for Covid-19. This goes into effect Friday a day before our thread starter was intending to take off, so I am sorry Lintworm. I assume this means that this trip won’t be happening.

The UK is exempted. A train ride and a flight from Blighty could set him back on course if he so desired.

The ban concerns all people who have been in the Schengen Area within the past 14 days, given that I live there, I doubt they will believe me :p. The only option would be to change my flight and depart tomorrow and arrive 5 hours before the travel ban becomes effective. This seems increasingly foolish anyway, so I am postponing my plans.

As much as it sucks to postpone my holiday, at least I can blame Trump for it. The news was getting worse by the day, so I was already doubting whether I should go and pushing that decision forward to Thursday night, basically the last moment that I could still rebook my flights... It feels good in a way that the decision was taken for me and it is probably for the best. I hope to be able to travel in May and I will rebook my flight to do so, but I honestly don't think the chances are terribly high for that to succeed... If so, maybe September becomes an option, or I just go to Madagascar then :P

I'm afraid don't either. The 86 colleges that stopped having in-person classes in NY yesterday will do so for the entire spring semester, which for me ends the second week of June, almost three full months away, as we had just begun our term last week. Schools that have been closed only through the end of March are forgetting that the cycle for one individual from contracting the virus to (hopeful) cure is 14 days. The end-of-March theory allows for no transmission, no successive 14-day cycles beyond the first, so these schools must be planning to extend as necessary. I'm truly sorry, Lintworm.

The idea behind restarting classes in CT on April 6 is to allow at least 14 days to pass between when students will be returning from Spring Break travels and when on-campus classes resume. The idea is to prevent any students who don't yet have signs/symptoms from unknowingly passing it to others within the roughly 14 day incubation periods. April 6 is only a tentative reopening date, the schools are preparing to be out for much longer than that depending on how the situation develops.

I'm sorry your trip has had to be postponed, but at least you should be able to get full refunds on most of your accommodations and transportation. Maybe in September I'll be able to actually meet you on your trip ;)

Thank you for your empathy, it is much appreciated :).

I have now rebooked my flights and if the situation improves, I might leave the first of May. There is a good chance that things won't have improved by then, in which case the trip could be postponed again or depending on personal circumstances I might do something else entirely.

Now I only need to reschedule my Amtrak and Greyhound reservations, which fortunately is free of charge during the COVID19 debacle.

Once the restrictions in China kicked in it was about three weeks until new cases started to decline dramatically (and you could see a noticeable inflection point at the two week mark). This, however, relies on universal restrictions, not just in heavily affected areas.

Bad to read that you can't travel to the US. I was looking forward to read your opinions on American zoos.

My planned trip to the southwestern US mid May to early June is also at risk, although I still have hopes. If Trump extents his ban for EU-ers or the corona crisis gets worse an other way, I don't have other options to go to the US this year. Strange thing is that when my trip gets cancelled, I won't get refund because technically the tour operator can do the trip but Trump won't let me go from the airplane to the arrival hall...

As expected, I won't be going to the US in May either, I see no indication that the US might be on top of things by then and zoos re-opened. I am now the owner of the travel voucher for KLM/Delta/Air France, so whenever life returns back to normal I can go, though it would likely be a slightly trimmed down version...

Unfortunately I don't see the end of travel being shut down any time soon. California looks like it may be locked down until the summer at least, and really no-one knows yet for how long.

The situation is bad for everyone, but thankfully @lintworm was able to cancel just before he was due to depart. I feel worse for @CGSwans who actually arrived here and started his lengthy trip and then had to book a return flight as the chaos was unfolding.

I am bumping an old thread. When the last posts were made in March 2020 we were at the start of lockdowns and it is now more than a year later that things are starting to open up due to vaccines. As I type this India is experiencing a nightmare (and I think Brazil is still bad?) but thankfully things are getting better here in USA and elsewhere. (On a personal note I have had a British Air booking for September that I bought last year and hope to be able to use - no hotels booked yet or final itinerary other than I land in Brussels and fly out of Venice). There has been much discussion on this thread about public transportation. I am not sure if this will make a tangible improvement (and if so how long it takes), but our current president is supportive of train travel (as am I): President Joe Biden Talks Benefits of Train Travel During Amtrak's 50th Anniversary Celebration (msn.com)
