President Trump has just blocked travel between Europe and America for the next 30 days as a precaution for Covid-19. This goes into effect Friday a day before our thread starter was intending to take off, so I am sorry Lintworm. I assume this means that this trip won’t be happening.
The UK is exempted. A train ride and a flight from Blighty could set him back on course if he so desired.
I hope to be able to travel in May and I will rebook my flight to do so, but I honestly don't think the chances are terribly high for that to succeed...
I'm afraid don't either. The 86 colleges that stopped having in-person classes in NY yesterday will do so for the entire spring semester, which for me ends the second week of June, almost three full months away, as we had just begun our term last week. Schools that have been closed only through the end of March are forgetting that the cycle for one individual from contracting the virus to (hopeful) cure is 14 days. The end-of-March theory allows for no transmission, no successive 14-day cycles beyond the first, so these schools must be planning to extend as necessary. I'm truly sorry, Lintworm.
The ban concerns all people who have been in the Schengen Area within the past 14 days, given that I live there, I doubt they will believe me. The only option would be to change my flight and depart tomorrow and arrive 5 hours before the travel ban becomes effective. This seems increasingly foolish anyway, so I am postponing my plans.
As much as it sucks to postpone my holiday, at least I can blame Trump for it. The news was getting worse by the day, so I was already doubting whether I should go and pushing that decision forward to Thursday night, basically the last moment that I could still rebook my flights... It feels good in a way that the decision was taken for me and it is probably for the best. I hope to be able to travel in May and I will rebook my flight to do so, but I honestly don't think the chances are terribly high for that to succeed... If so, maybe September becomes an option, or I just go to Madagascar then![]()
I have now rebooked my flights and if the situation improves, I might leave the first of May. There is a good chance that things won't have improved by then, in which case the trip could be postponed again or depending on personal circumstances I might do something else entirely.
As expected, I won't be going to the US in May either, I see no indication that the US might be on top of things by then and zoos re-opened. I am now the owner of the travel voucher for KLM/Delta/Air France, so whenever life returns back to normal I can go, though it would likely be a slightly trimmed down version...
