Most exotic animals seen on the pet trade

They're not unheard of as pets, I come across them in various places occasionally. Teddy Roosevelt's son famously had one, Josiah.

Most sellers on there mention they require permits for animals; very few animals, beyond the hybrid cats and rodents, are available to just anyone. Ability to get one of those permits varies wildly. Some states just require you pay a couple bucks and show you can contain the animal, others require you to have worked with the species for several years, etc.

Probably depends on what state you live in. Although, having worked with an American Badger I certainly wouldn't recommend them as pets!
Tame badgers are extremely common in Wisconsin roadside zoos. Of course, I've never owned one, but it seems to me they would make okay (if a bit destructive) pets.

A few months ago I also saw a pair of Leopoldi Stingrays (Potomotrygon leopoldi) for $12 500 AUD!
Update on the pair of Leopoldi Stingrays: they were still there at the fish store today with a reduced price of $9000 AUD. A bargain really! :p

Besides seeing my first ricefish and a few nice species of rainbowfish, I saw some Short-finned Eels (Anguilla australis) for sale which is rather unusual.

Wow
In the US, bison are pretty common as to like at big farms and what not.

Lemurs are actually legal in my state, so don't be too surprised if an Ohio Lemur Center shows up :p ;)
Bison are actually farmed in other places too, so are common in some spots I suppose..In Britain there are very few exotic animals in the trade, though I may have worryingly spotted a Blackchin Guitar Shark.
