Based on photos and a bit of research I estimate the male to be around 41 and the female to be around 40. So yeah, definitely getting on in age...
Historically there is also only one Loretta in the US bonobo population - so there shouldn't be any doubt who their mother is!Makasi and Kalli are Loretta's (from the San Diego Zoo) offspring. I would be interested in hearing where you got the information that they weren't.

Back when I was making the list I wasn't sure if it was the Loretta that was in Europe or the one un the U.S., haha. I just forgot to edit that off the list.
Loretta in Europe....? There isn't one?
Yes, we do! I hope you don't mind me mentioning it. I always appreciate it when someone corrects me.Maybe I was thinking about a different error I had where I had it listed as "Not [Female Name]" one time and someone corrected me. I clearly had some confusion from back when I made the list. Everyone makes mistakes.![]()
KABONGO was born in 1979, WAMBA in 1980, they had offspring two times, but only one male survived. He was called MAMBO and had been shipped to Columbus Zoo. There he sired two babies, but unfortunately died in 2006.
Female bonobos go through menopause just like human females do. They also get human birth control pills when they don't have a breeding recommendation. Loretta at the SDZ had a breeding recommendation when she was 41 but the pairing of Vic and Loretta never worked out. It could be that she was 41 and he was 14 and had never sired.Do Bonobos become sterile with age? I assume they'd be able to reproduce until death, it just got more risky the older they got.

I am very excited for Kesi. I didn't think it was going to happen for her. It has been 5 years since the SSP transfer. No pregnancies happened at the San Diego Zoo because of the transfer.Cincinnati annouced that KESI is pregnant, sire is VERNOM.
