A pair of Cheer pheasants have been released into the wild in India and further releases are planned :
Himachal CM releases cheer pheasants in nature
- At the end of the 1980s - beginning of the 1990s a large number of fertile eggs laid by captive birds in privat collections in Europe were send to Asia ( don't remember anymore if it was to India or Pakistan ) to be incubated there and after being raised used as breeding birds and/or birds to be released into the wild.
IMost eggs were provided by private breeders but if I remember right also a number of zoos were involved in this project.
After some publishity of the project it became quite silence and I don't know how the programm has worked out.
Maybe a fellow ZooChatter can provide more information about the history of the Cheer pheasant programm ?
