A pair of Cheer pheasants have been released into the wild in India and further releases are planned :

Himachal CM releases cheer pheasants in nature

- At the end of the 1980s - beginning of the 1990s a large number of fertile eggs laid by captive birds in privat collections in Europe were send to Asia ( don't remember anymore if it was to India or Pakistan ) to be incubated there and after being raised used as breeding birds and/or birds to be released into the wild.
IMost eggs were provided by private breeders but if I remember right also a number of zoos were involved in this project.
After some publishity of the project it became quite silence and I don't know how the programm has worked out.
Maybe a fellow ZooChatter can provide more information about the history of the Cheer pheasant programm ?

Wasn't either the Pheasant Trust or the WPA doing this 20 or 30 years ago...?
edit - 80's or 90's would make it the WPA? - so there should be records of what was done...

Yes I remember this also . If I'm right it was the WPA which collected firtile eggs from breeders in the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK and most prob. also other European countries ( in cooperation with Aviornis ) and these eggs were send to - if I remember right - Pakistan were they were hatched and later re-introduced.
Must have somewhere several articles in several magazines about these actions, but can't find these right now.

WPA appears to still be active.

Cheer Pheasants are mentioned on their web-site as a historic project, but what I could find makes no mention of eggs sent back from Europe.
John Corder at WPA might be a good start for questions...?

I worked on the Cheer Pheasant project in Pakistan in the summer of 1978. Long term it wasn’t a success. WPA is still active, they’re currently working on Edwards’ Pheasant restoration in Vietnam.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Wildlife Dept. has recently discovered a (small?) population of cheer pheasant in Mansehra district around 75km north of Islamabad and they're somewhat frequently recorded, albeit through arrests of poachers / illegal hunters, in Pakistani administered Kashmir.

Wow, that is quite impressive to hear @FBBird ! It would be interesting to hear more about your experience in the conservation of this species.
