Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Longleat Safari Park 2020

Yes and also new pride male Harry who's grandfather is Wallace from Blackpool is brother to Malaika, Sweet Pea & Pepper and possibly the other females.

I'm guessing that the younger females are also Malaika's daughters and sisters (cannot be certain though)

He’s also paternally linked as he’s Kenya’s grandson

Just watching today's episode and during the piece on the lions, only male Simba was mentioned.
Is his brother Klaus still there? They were part of the pride of 13. Appreciate any news

It took me a while but i found photos of a pride with two male lions from this month so that would suggest he’s still there

I can’t be sure on names but when I visited at the start of July there was one pride with 2 males visible and one pride with one Male visible.

There's also a pride of 4 males at the end of the safari. I'm not sure on the names either :)

Toby , George , Ghost and Dandy ...i think

Yes these names sound familiar. I would like to to think a new home could be found for these males however who would want 4 males? Have they still got manes or have they been castrated?

Longleat lions are over represented in Uk captive populations at least 5/6 collections are comprised entirely of Longleat’s stock. Also there is a massive influx of male lions being born in the last two years -16 of 24 -so there’s no place for them to go.

Just as well they get along reasonably well in bachelor groups

A new series of Animal Park begins on BBC1 next Monday (17th August).
Just wondering do zoo not need want male gorilla. As can understand Keisho and infertile make his position likely to stay, but why not move Avendi if he is causing issue to spread his genes elsewhere in the world?

I don't watch these T.V. programmes. Are there problems in the male Gorilla group?

( Evindi is from quite well represented genetic lines so may not be required for breeding. Also I don't know if he has been tested for the Klinefelter's syndrome his older brother Kesho has?)

Only between Avendi and Keisho as Avendi wants to be silverback and Kelso won’t back down but they said Avendi is at the age 14 when it’s most likely he would take charge of his own group as a male gorilla, but it’s causing issues with the other Gorilla in the house not knowing who is leader , so a task such as feeding isn’t taking 15 min like before more like 2.5hrs!

What are the issues surrounding Longleat's White rhino? I know the group were imported specifically for breeding but have any offspring ever been produced? Has Longleat ever successfully bred rhino?

The bull (Unjarnu) isn't capable of doing the job. He doesn't dominate the female's and the two older ones (that came with him from South Africa) are probably infertile now because they have left it so long.

I don't know the details of Longleat's current white rhinos but two white rhinos were successfully bred at Longleat in 1979, there were two more successful births in 1981 and a fifth was born there in 1990.

Current stock: the South Africa import of 1.2 individuals happened in 2003, all growing up as subadult/juveniles. Two additional captive-born females were added in 2010. Nisha is right on their current breeding stats. The South African imports were all born around 1999 and pretty much their window for natural breeding is closing up. Not sure on details on the ground: but the old "issue" maintaining young non adult rhinos together does not exactly hold water nor promote breeding )a known quantity at the time of import already).

Original stock: Bred 2.0 in 1979 (the bull Easyboy/Churchill was later used for AI at Budapest Zoo), 0.2 in 1981 (both females Eva and Sophie sent to Givskud - no offspring), 1.0 in 1982 (ended up in a circus .... of all places) and 1.0 in 1990 (transferred back to South Africa). Around 1993 there was a major shake up and both breeding females were sent France and Spain and new already older white rhino - non breeding - were brought in from Windsor Safari Park. Of course, non of the latter ever bred.

The two female's that arrived in 2010 - they kept Ebun (who came from Munster). The other female, Kara (Born at Arnhem) went over to France in 2012. So they have 1.3 currently
