ZSL Whipsnade Zoo ZSL Whipsnade Zoo 2020

I dont personally think thats a very kind way of looking at things. I may have totally got you wrong and if so i appolgise, but wasting a good crisis? Whats good about a crisis?

It is paraphrasing Winston Churchill and it basically means that a crisis is an excellent time to review the status quo in a company and make beneficial changes (both short and long term). There is nothing "good" about the COVID crisis itself, but in a good company it is a time for reflection and improvement. It is generally easier to change things in times of crisis as well, given the larger sense of urgency and reduced resistance....

I apologise, i didnt realise it was a Churchill quote

Sometimes a crisis can bring opportunity for change? Thank you for your honesty earlier. Please reach out to this community if you need an outlet or support. I’m in Devon & would be happy to show you my local zoos. Take care.

I do wonder what will replace the sea lions, if the enclosure will be completely converted or if the framework will remain the same. The new home for the sea lions is seemingly quite an obvious one though. ;)

Thank you for the offer, a long way away though! What is your local zoo?

Oh? where will they be going?

I believe parts of the exhibit are listed, so that may restrict a full-blown redo. Certainly the pump system is of concern (though not as archaic as London’s Aquarium) and the underwater viewing is dilapidated, to put it mildly!

All this, together with the current climate, does make me wonder if they’ll go full-throttle with a new species or concept. Surely there’ll have been some thought gone into this before they gave the green light for the sealions departure. The press release vaguely alludes to this. Such a prominent building can’t afford to stay empty for too long.

Are there any pregnant female Asian Elephants following the arrival of the new breeding bull Ming-Jung?
Because it’s 22 months pregnancy it be a while yet as the earliest he could have mated was earlier this year in lockdown! But I think the main elephant they will want to breed from is Donna having not had any calf’s that have lived before.Otherwise their is only Karishma who is of breading age although it’s been a few years since her last calf and not till she 7/8 years old Elizabeth.

Or, in a ZSL world, cichlids...lots and lots of cichlids!
"Would that it were so simple!" (to quote the Coen brothers).
Anything tropical would need a roof and heating.
Anything polar would need a roof and cooling.
Anything sensitive (like auks or sea ducks) would need shading, much more sophisticated filtration and perhaps a wave machine.
My money is on subantarctic penguins (little blues would be nice).

Just back from a great visit to whipsnade highlights were great view of the baby red panda first thing in the morning being carried by mum and walking alone. Also a baby yak was born literally hours before we got to them about 1pm.
Other things of note 2 female white rhinos have arrived from 2 different UK zoos however the lady we spoke to couldn't remember which zoos. They are now together and will shortly be introduced to the rest of the females.
A keeper confirmed the sealions are off to YWP.
The spider monkeys enclosure is now empty not sure why though?
And finally overheard a keeper saying base camp is hopefully getting a massive redevelopment if they get the finances.
