Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2020

Does anyone know what happened to the Indian mongoose? Last I heard they were offshow but not heard anything about them since

As far as I am aware, Chester does not hold Indian mongoose. Are you referring to dwarf mongoose?
No, there was supposedly Indian mongoose that were going to rotate with the asiatic lions that we’re behind the scenes?

I remember hearing it was the dwarf mongoose, sorry. Either way, zoogiraffe has pointed out that they do in fact exist! So my apologies for being wrong there!

No reason for you to have heard of there arrival as the zoo hasn't exactly jumped up and down about them, despite them having a fascinating story which education could run several angles, with all of which are a positive pr story for the zoo

Indeed, I think the only public bit of information was a brief mention in the local paper, in an article about the new lion enclosure. I think they might have got a whopping half a sentence in publicity.

Planning a visit to Chester next Thursday, how is availability going now,are midweek days selling out?
Thanks

Heartbreak as popular matriarch elephant dies at Chester Zoo.
The decision was made to euthanize her as her Arthritis was getting worse and her quality of life was deteriorating.

I hope this devastating news doesn’t bring on Elephant endotheliotropic herpesviruses (EEHV)),within the HI-Way family especially Anjan and Indali. I mention this as following the death of Sithami her son Aayu contracted EEHV and tragically passed away. I Mention Indali as she is vulnerable to the virus and the death of her Great-Grandma could trigger a relapse!

Neither an elephant being euthanised due to arthritis, and one dying due to peritonitis from a ruptured gastric ulcer, are risk factors for other members of the herd contracting EEHV ;) so your fears are fortunately misplaced.

@TeaLovingDave so was it totally coincidental, that Aayu and Nandita passed away within two months of their Mum and elder sister? I thought it was the stress and anxiety of loosing a family member that triggered both calves to contract EEHV. Also who will the new Matriach of the Hi-Way family heard be?

Really sad news, a real character at the zoo that will be sorely missed. Also yes as mentioned before, I do wonder how Anjan and the rest of the herd will cope.
