Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2020

@TeaLovingDave so was it totally coincidental, that Aayu and Nandita passed away within two months of their Mum and elder sister? I thought it was the stress and anxiety of loosing a family member that triggered both calves to contract EEHV. Also who will the new Matriach of the Hi-Way family heard be?
hedgehog is right , herpes virus can be brought by stress or changes within the herd

So it would appear she suffered from the same ailments as her stablemate Azizah at London/Whipsnade, who was euthanised under similar conditions last year. Azizah’s deterioration was particularly horrific to witness. Clearly whatever logging camp ZSL picked up Thi, Azizah and Geetha (also deceased) had serious welfare issues.
azizah and thi came from the same shipment from burmah . gheeta did not she was a gift to london zoo from sri lanka i believe . i may be wrong but gheeta definately did not come from the burmah shipment .

@wibbs many thanks for confirming that my knowledge was correct. Do you think that Thai’s passing will cause the onset of EEHV? If EEHV is triggered I hope that the Chester Zoo team can help the calves recover by using the same treatment as Indali had last year!

I hope that Mya the sole surviving former London Zoo elephant does not require euthanasia, due to arthritis like her heard mates Azizah (Lanyang Layang) and THAI HI-Way.

Indeed "Gheeta" (also known as "Dilberta") came from Sri Lanka not Burma; the Sri Lankan government presented her to the Duke of Edinburgh.

no one can really answer that question no one knows only time will tell . we all just have hope not

@Panthera1981 did Geetha also get euthanised due to arthritis?
yes , athritus is very common in ageing elephants . gheetas leg problems were caused by being pushed into the moat at chester by another elephant , since then she had an ongoing issues injury with her leg . before thi was sent to chester cant remember the year , london sent gheeta to chester hopefuly to breed with the bull . unfortunately it didnt work out as gheeta clashed with other herd members so her stay at chester was shortlived ,

Think there were also dominance issues between herself and Kaylee when the London group transferred to Whipsnade, Thi having been transferred to Chester far earlier in order to cut costs at ZSL. I don’t think I ever saw both sets of London and Whipsnade cows fully integrated together despite keepers best efforts.

im not 100 percent sure but i think gheeta was ok mixing with the whipsnade group i think the issues was with mya not being able to mix . hence probably why she has been the one to be moved ie with the elephants transfering to PC too .

@wibbs didn't Gettha (Dilberta) trample and kill one of her Zookeepers namely Jim Robson while she resided at London Zoo. I believe that this horrific attack was the main reason why the Elephants were transferred to London Zoo’s sister Zoo Whipsnade. Once at Whipsnade I believe Azizah (Layang Layang) pushed a male Zookeeper and broke his arm.
@wibbs moving back on topic I hope that the stress of Thai’s passing does not trigger EEHV within the heard. I hope that despite being an incredibly young Matarach Sundara can lead the heard without too much stress.
@wibbs don't trust my knowledge but I believe that Sundara is the youngest captive Elephant to ever become a Matrach.

@The Hedgehog it has already been stated that the chances of Sundara becoming the new matriach are slim and that Maya who already has lead the herd alongside Thai so will probably become the new matriach.

Whatever the outcome the main thing will be securing the future of the herd and continue the fight against the virus!!!!

Tragically Jim Robson was killed by an elephant at London Zoo but the elephant that killed him was "Mya" not "Geetha".

it was mya that caused the accident at london , not gheeta . . i think your find maya will be matrach . it usually goes through elephants age , although maya is older than thi , if thi was the matriach then that wouldve been through maya allower her too ,
