Who was Sonia?
Do they tend to stay out of view for a couple of months after birth? I still haven't seen a really young one, so it would be a reason to visit on Friday if there was a chance to photograph it.Giant anteater born on 01/06/20
At the moment it’s currently on-show in the anteater house as it’s at the front of the house photography isn’t the best due to the lighting.Do they tend to stay out of view for a couple of months after birth? “We are still the only zoo in the UK to ever breed the Eastern White Pelican and have a really well-established group that is a firm favourite amongst visitors.”
Few notes from visit Thursday. Sitatunga have moved into the old blesbok house and now share the field with the giraffes. Only see 3 zebras and one bongo. Tortoises now share the field with the bongo. 3 rhea chicks playing was one of the highlights of the day. The big cat house was closed , might be opening soon as there where barriers up inside to do a one way system though it would be tight if anybody stopped you wouldn't be able too pass untill they moved on. Went in the cafe if you want chips it's £3.95 and they put them in a plastic bucket and spade. I know zoos are desperate for cash but by forcing me to eat chips from a novelty bucket and spade that I have no use for and just went in the bin can't be good for the environment. I could of taken it home and put it in my recycle bin but I didn't fancy carrying it around all day.
Blackpool keeps Hartmann's mountain zebra, right? The sitatunga moved in during lockdown, they’re the offspring of the main group near the children’s farm. The zebras are 1.2, parents and daughter, the other zebra (Jabali) moved to Paignton in December 2019. Bongos have been down to 0.1 since late last year I believe.

Paignton have one lone Bongo too! Could one move to start a herd? I know it’s not always as easy as that but....The sitatunga moved in during lockdown, they’re the offspring of the main group near the children’s farm. It would seem rational...Paignton have one lone Bongo too! Could one move to start a herd? I know it’s not always as easy as that but....

Blackpool "owned" 0.4 bongo up till start 2018. They seem to have lost 2 females in 2018. Not sure what happened to no. 3. Are they on phase out at Blackpool at all or will they bring in a new male?
I think one can tie the knots together on whether bongo are a stay over or leave at Blackpool by now. That's such a pity about the bongo; less than a decade ago I remember seeing a fairly big group at Blackpool with a youngster, easily one of the highlights of my visit back then. I hope they make a comeback as they're one of my favourite hoofed mammals.
There are just 14 of the species in UK zoos with only two breeding pairs, said a zoo spokeswoman.
