Blackpool Zoo Blackpool Zoo News 2020

Ahh right so Sonia has passed away then. I've heard mixed responses that she was still alive and had passed so unsure whether or not. Thanks

Do they tend to stay out of view for a couple of months after birth? I still haven't seen a really young one, so it would be a reason to visit on Friday if there was a chance to photograph it.
At the moment it’s currently on-show in the anteater house as it’s at the front of the house photography isn’t the best due to the lighting.

Caribbean flamingo chick hatches:

For the first time in its 48 year history Blackpool Zoo has welcomed a parent reared flamingo chick.

Keepers have traditionally removed eggs from the flamingo nests and hand-reared the chicks in the bird nursery. This is to stop the small and vulnerable chicks being stolen by seagulls.

The parents of this particular chick are both more than 25 years old and this particular species can live up to 50 or even older.

The zoo now have 35 Caribbean flamingos and are hoping to bring more in from other institutions before the end of the year.

Other news from the bird department:

“It has certainly been a busy year here in our bird department as we have also hatched a Magellanic penguin, five Blacksmith Plovers, two Eastern White pelicans, eight Spoonbill chicks, three Java sparrows, and a Mount Omei babbler; with even more eggs in nests across the zoo.”

“We are still the only zoo in the UK to ever breed the Eastern White Pelican and have a really well-established group that is a firm favourite amongst visitors.”

I noted the large Pelican group on my last visit there. Its certainly impressive and quite unique in the UK.

0.0.1 Pileated gibbon born recently to Ivy and Chamoa. This brings the current population at the zoo to six individuals (hopefully this time it is a female). Other news is that sadly, Helene the breeding female Hartmann’s mountain zebra recently give birth to a stillborn foal.

Few notes from visit Thursday. Sitatunga have moved into the old blesbok house and now share the field with the giraffes. Only see 3 zebras and one bongo. Tortoises now share the field with the bongo. 3 rhea chicks playing was one of the highlights of the day. The big cat house was closed , might be opening soon as there where barriers up inside to do a one way system though it would be tight if anybody stopped you wouldn't be able too pass untill they moved on. Went in the cafe if you want chips it's £3.95 and they put them in a plastic bucket and spade. I know zoos are desperate for cash but by forcing me to eat chips from a novelty bucket and spade that I have no use for and just went in the bin can't be good for the environment. I could of taken it home and put it in my recycle bin but I didn't fancy carrying it around all day.

The sitatunga moved in during lockdown, they’re the offspring of the main group near the children’s farm. The zebras are 1.2, parents and daughter, the other zebra (Jabali) moved to Paignton in December 2019. Bongos have been down to 0.1 since late last year I believe.

Blackpool keeps Hartmann's mountain zebra, right?

Blackpool "owned" 0.4 bongo up till start 2018. They seem to have lost 2 females in 2018. Not sure what happened to no. 3. Are they on phase out at Blackpool at all or will they bring in a new male?

Paignton have one lone Bongo too! Could one move to start a herd? I know it’s not always as easy as that but....

That's such a pity about the bongo; less than a decade ago I remember seeing a fairly big group at Blackpool with a youngster, easily one of the highlights of my visit back then. I hope they make a comeback as they're one of my favourite hoofed mammals.

I think one can tie the knots together on whether bongo are a stay over or leave at Blackpool by now.

Pileated gibbon birth:

Blackpool Zoo celebrates birth of endangered pileated gibbon

There are just 14 of the species in UK zoos with only two breeding pairs, said a zoo spokeswoman.

Parents Ivy and Chamoa have also produced two male gibbons called Dobbie and Iwani who live with them in the small primate house.

"We're hoping for a little girl after two beautiful boys."

Ms Pennie also said "Ivy is 31 and has been with us for 26 years. We almost lost her ten years ago when she became very ill, so for her to recover and go onto have three healthy babies is just wonderful."

I can think of at least three breeding pairs surely? Blackpool, Twycross, Paignton. Possibly Twycross are not breeding at present but the pair plus grown youngster is there.
