Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2020

Tragically Jim Robson was killed by an elephant at London Zoo but the elephant that killed him was "Mya" not "Geetha".
@Tim May Mya is now the sole surviving London Zoo Elephant! The BBC News article released at the time of the attack stated that Dilberta (Gheeta) killed Jim Robson and not Mya however the news is prone to getting the facts wrong.
While on the topic of London/Whipsnade’s Elephants, why do the Elephants have two names for instance Azizah (Layang Layang) or Donna (Geeta)?

As both "Wibbs" and myself posted, "Geetha" did not kill a London Zoo keeper.

"Dilberta" was the elephant's official name; this was name by which she was known to the public. "Geetha" was the name used by the keepers.

Just to try and get back on track of current zoo news, are there any plans for the Black rhinos? Any moves planned for any of the youngsters or will they keep some of the young bulls for future breeding? Gabe is one of only a handful of calves produced by the late Kifaru so could be genetically important. Hopefully it won't be another 10 years before the next calf arrives

Bit of a random question last time we were there(last year) the giant otters were closed off with rumours of pups being born, have had a quick search online and can't find any confirmation of this.
Did they have pups last year?

I don't know how many pups they had, but the only Giant otter there now is the sole survivor. The parents have moved to France I think.

I had a peer in through the glass doors on Thursday and the (very) small amount you can see looks effectively finished, but of course that's not really saying much given how much you can't see! Of course the animals will need moving and settling before it reopens but opening in another month might still be feasible.

Maybe they will leave the orangs until the winter and move them when they close it again for a few weeks over a quiet time. Just move some birds, and the toistoises back, plus the insects. When it opened originally there wasn't much in there.

What's in the new enclosure next to the penguins? Imagine you are standing looking at the penguins through the glass panels - the enclosure to your right, up the slope.
