Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2020

Search for Sarikei's name on ZooChat and you will see that @ShonenJake13 reported that she gave birth on 2nd April 2017. He was subsequently named Tombol. You can find photos of him in the Gallery (provided you spell his name correctly).

Great to see the new birth of the Bornean orangutan announced to the press today.
I feel the Bornean are often overlooked by visitors at the zoo compared to the Sumatran orangutans.

Does anyone think Tuan may move back on show in the final section of RORA after the silvery gibbons move back to Monsoon Forest?
I have not seen Tuan since 2016.
Are the red panda cubs still in the final section-are they due to move elsewhere soon?

Well TIL I share a birthday with an orang :p

Well... you can see him if you are tall enough ;)

Can someone please issue an update about the new hierarchy and how the Hi-Way's,Chester's heard of Asian Elephants, are coping following the death of the long-term Matrach Thai-Hi-Way? I hope that all of the surviving heard members are happy and healthy,in addition too Indali,Anjan and Riva-Hi-Way remaining free of EEHV.
Kind regards The Hedgehog

I would imagine it is far too soon for anyone to make any judgements or presumptions about complex social dynamics such as this at present!

@TeaLovingDave how long do you estimate it will be before we will know the new hierarchy or if the stress of Thai-Hi-Way causes Indali,Anjan or Riva to contract EEHV? I believe that within six weeks Sithami -Hi-Way Thai's daughter passed away EEHV was detected and proved fatal to both Sithtami's calf Aayu as well as Anjan's older sister Nandita -Hi-Way! @TeaLovingDave I thought that at the current time the same period has passed from Sithtami and Thai Hi-Way passing and EEHV being diagnosed within the calves.

@Elephant Enthusiast and @Elephantelephant could you also assist @TeaLovingDave to answer my question?

@The Hedgehog when Sithami died back in 2018 Nandita and Aayu were in the age bracket for contracting the virus.
Now I'm not saying that Sithami's death didn't cause stress to the youngsters but there could have been other reasons as to why the virus kicked in
(it could also have just been coincidental sadly)

Tbh I think Chester, as the rest of us, are just keen to keep the remaining herd well and jump into action if if the worst happens. Sometimes we don't always get the answers we want as to why animals die.

Not to mention how potentially upsetting and stressful all of the speculation on here must be for the actual elephant keepers at Chester should they end up reading this!

Agreed, I think it is rather out-of-place and misplaced feedback in the general. I also do think the subject has been dealt with so extensively here and we have come to some end of the line on this one.
