ZooParc de Beauval Zooparc de Beauval News 2020

Has it even been tried?

BTW: same was said of pangolins! I suppose it is acting upon the ecology of a species and fine-tuning their needs for captive environments. Very challenging, but I am the last to say it cannot be done. Think outside the box, please!
Yes actually. Pretty sure London has housed some over the years and I'm pretty sure some zoos in South America will have a bunch, but I'm pretty sure they don't really breed.

Several European and American zoos kept giant armadillos during the 70's and 80's. One of these lived for 16 years (initially at Rotterdam, then moved to San Antonio), which suggests they aren't intrinsically difficult to keep. None of these animals ever bred but I don't know if the zoos they were at (or are at, in South America's case) ever tried.

I'm inclined to agree with @Kifaru Bwana and @cliffxdavis on this one - a breeding programme would provide a valuable backup and hopefully the information researchers are collecting from the wild could feed into this.

London Zoo had two giant armadillos; the first was obtained in 1959.

The second was acquired in 1976 when the President of Brazil presented one to Queen Elizabeth; this animal was housed in the old Stork & Ostrich House where I saw it many times. It was sent to Rotterdam Zoo in 1978.

"ELEPHANT BUSINESS INC. Novemeber 3rd, 2020. This time some actual real time elephant news and happenings.
Line Monange Chief Animalier at Peaugres Safari Park and her team using patient & good judgement have successfully load Akili the 20 year old male African into his purposely design travel crate for his journey to Beauval Zoo Parc.
Akili was a very nervous animal at the beginning of crate introduction,, but over the last weeks has responsed to the conditioning and careful planning the the team have implemented. Well done Line congrads to everyone of the combined elephant teams."

At long last!

I revisited the dome and after the first impression of wonder at the size of the structure, my main impression was rather disappointment.

We arrive in a huge dome but unfortunately I do not understand the interest of such a great height. Very few birds ...
Then unfortunately I find the forest too controlled, we do not have the impression of being in the jungle, the paths and restaurants are too visible.

I couldn't see a lot of animals but it's not their fault.

In conclusion, I liked my visit but the dome is a disappointment. For much less money they could have done much better. A greenhouse in the forests of the Congo would have been much more judicious: chimpanzees, gorillas, okapis, bongos and others could even have been much more attractive in my opinion.

Recent births in the zoo :
- 3 scarlet ibis,
- 2 dwarf mongooses,
- 3 capybaras,
- 1 Kirk's dik-dik,
- 1 grey langur,
- 1 sitatunga,
- 30 Madagascar blue stick insects,
- 1 Maranon poison frog,
- 8 yellow-banded poison dart frogs,
- 1 andean condor in august (the first for the pair since its arrival 7 years ago).

And I think we don't speak about the birth of two pumas a few months ago.

Reportedly from Khao Kheow Open Range Zoo in Thailand.

I hope Antoine or another French ZC-forumster can confirm soon!

I didn't know about the Thaï Zoo, their website is very well done and they have a good selection of species beside the Doucs, if anyone is interested.

For the record: Out of range Thai zoos like Bangkok Zoo (unfortunately now closed, allthough reportedly a bigger zoo should be built on the outskirts of Bangkok) and Khao Kheow ORZ have been at the forefront of the delicate husbandry and animal management for douc langur. Both had / have large groups of douc langur on site. I do believe - at this point - they may even be more successful than say Singapore Zoo in breeding the species.
