How current are the figures for Japan - Tokyo Ueno Zoo?
And specifically: what is the (published) source?

I knew there was a thread for this somewhere. As per the zoo-specific threads:

1.0 (Malcolm/Peanut) has moved from London to Bristol, to pair with 0.1 Tahiry
 
In Europe, it seems the UK is the place to see AyeAye. Have seen them in all four UK/Jersey zoos and rather take them for granted as a result, yet actually very rare elsewhere.
 
Just read in the 2019 Annual Report of Frankfurt Zoo, the young, 2018 born male "Leo" passed away. His unfortunate death means a big big loss for the european population.

He was struggling with a massive infestation with the roundworm Pterygodermatites nyctebi which requires an intermediate host, in any case cockroaches, to reproduce, and unfortunately these are very difficult to fight in the Grzimekhaus.

So 3.1 Aye-Aye left at Frankfurt Zoo.

Whilst every individual aye aye is important, genetically Leo has an older full brother Kimala at the zoo, so thankfully the MalalaxKintana branch is still represented.
 
Jersey zoo have had two aye-aye born this year. All things considered quite a good year for Europe's aye-aye population.

One is a little female that was rejected by the mother and consequently was hand-reared by keepers, she has been called "Mifaly" (meaning "playful one" in Malagasy).


The other is a little male who was apparently accepted by his mother without any issue and was named "Marary Kenatra" (which translates as "patient and shy one" in Malagasy).


In case anyone is interested I wrote a little about the history of Jersey's aye-ayes in this thread: History of Jersey Zoo & Durrell Trust ex-situ / in-situ conservation efforts.

The second baby has been renamed to Mahery Kenatra apparently.

No it’s a male. Mahery Kenatra translates better than Marary Kenatra. Whilst they intended Marary to mean patient, it could be translated to shamefully sick or poltergeist depending on the dialect.
Mahery means strong in all dialects of Malagasy, so it was just a nicer name.

Oh I see, thats a great name , although I have to say I really like the idea of marary as "poltergeist" :D
