Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo Chimpanzees

Thats awesome stuff! Thanks for sharing. I didn't realise they were housed there to be honest. How many groups did they have prior? More than the current 2? Im talking in the not too distant past :)
I think in about 2012 all chimps remaining in the green mile and what’s now the siamang cage were moved to either the original gorilla enclosure (which now holds some monkeys I believe, it isn’t far from the tapir enclosure), the chimp colony building, and the old gorilla enclosure. After that all chimps in the oldest gorilla enclosure either died off or were integrated into another group (I’m not sure on this) thus leaving the 2 groups, the group in the colony building (seen here in an old YouTube video:
) and the chimps in the old gorilla enclosure (Jambos group), eventually jambo’s group were moved into the far end of chimpanzee Eden and the 4 remaining from the colony were moved into the front, there was a good map explaining it all which I believe was posted by @Pertinax quite a time ago but I haven’t found it in the archives as of yet. Hope this helped :)

Jambo really has been in the wars a lot since he suffered from Alopecia.

I’ve known Jambo for many years, and he’s always been bald in that time. He used to live with just one female (Tojo I think) and he seemed like an old man. I have been amazed at his journey through the merging of the groups and I think any male chimp looking for dominance would be in the wars, alopecia or not.

From what I can see the only non-castrated males they have now are Kibale and Jambo. I could be wrong precisely, but I know most of the other males are castrated. Kibale was brought in as a genetic future breeder of pure West African chimps- his time may yet come, whereas Jambo was a long-time resident. I think there was a long-lasting power struggle between these two- I saw nasty wounds on Jambo from fighting one time. I believe Kibale is now the top-ranker.

I think Jambo still has the loyalty of some fearsome women, poor Kibale, I always think he must have been surprised to find himself with such a weird bunch of chimps.

CEO has indicated the intention is still to bring in pure Western female chimps for him- but due to existing circumstances, I have no idea when. When he first arrived, they had DNA'd five of their own, but that has since dwindled to one or two and none are any use for breeding.

If they were to start breeding again, would Jambo be separated or castrated? It’s just I assume that if he still has his balls he can still gather young, which obviously isn’t a good thing due to the fact he is zoomix and most likely has bad genetics (suggested by his alopecia).

He would likely be vasectomised, so he would still have the parts but just wouldn’t be able to use them in that way.
(He does have bad genetics, his mother is Coco and his father is one of his brothers if I remember rightly)

Danny died 22 November 2017. I think the zoo announced it at the time. There was an attempt to integrate the two groups and in the ensuing 'dominance' struggle Danny was fatally injured.
