Bronx Zoo Bronx Zoo News 2021

I sure hope the Bronx Zoo gets new De Brazza's Monkeys in the future, I heard there’s one left and it might get transferred to another zoo. De Brazza’s Monkeys are one of the most underrated primates in my opinion.

I decided to swing by the zoo again today to celebrate the ending of a pretty rough semester. Despite only two weeks since my last visit, there were definitely some notable additions:

-The zoo has added Asian Black-Spined Toad to the Splendid Treefrog/Vietnamese Black-Breasted Leaf Turtle terrarium.
-I spotted one of the Green Junglefowl in the upper vegetated area of the Silvered Leaf Monkey enclosure.
-Bizarrely the zoo has added brand new signage to the gharial enclosure for the Red-Crowned Roofed Turtle despite the fact that the animal hasn't been spotted in there since January 2020 and was last seen in January 2021 in World of Reptiles from which it is also now gone.
-The underwater viewing area for the gharials has reopened.
-I saw the Bactrian Deer today and they are gorgeous young animals. The Chital, Indian Muntjac, Indian Hog Deer, and Formosan Sika have all been no shows so far this year, though, with little to no mention of them from the monorail guides apart from naming the Chital as an inhabitant of the meadow and mentioning that one of the hog deer has had a fawn.
-The Gelada and Nubian Ibex were both back out on-exhibit together today, though the hyrax were not. Still only four ibex were out, so it seems the San Diego boys haven't been integrated yet. Also only four Gelada were visible today, but this included a very active newborn.
-I noticed both Scarlet Ibis and Black-Faced Ibis sitting on nests.
-There's a second black oystercatcher on-exhibit in the SeaBird Aviary
-The Lesser Adjutants still haven't gone on-exhibit yet for some reason.
-I spotted the Bothrops bilineatus on-exhibit so can confirm the animal is indeed there.
-After a couple years gone from the zoo, Shield-Tailed Agamas have returned.
-Not sure if I've ever reported this before but the zoo no longer has kangaroo-rat, hasn't for some time. I'm not sure then what ball of fluff if living in the kangaroo-rat enclosure in the Children's Zoo then.
-A colony of Pachnoda marginata peregrina beetles have replaced the dead goliath beetles in CGF.
-Shingleback Skink have gone on-exhibit in WoR.
-The spotted skunk has been replaced by a small colony of Feathertail Gliders, now on-exhibit but unsigned.

Not sure which animals you're talking about but I'd guess because they've outgrown the troop and are now bachelors awaiting a new home. That's pure speculation, though.

Bronx has one bachelor group: Johari, Babatunde, Barraca and M'domo, they don't live with the females. Sometimes the other two males are hided or inside or even had any minor issue and the group isn't together.
Mizani, Kidogo and Mokonzi are too young to be removed from the family group yet.

Spent yesterday at the zoo. Perfect weather and a light crowd. Not going to try to provide a Thylo style inventory--can't match his recall of detail. Random observations: Didn't see the Bactrian Deer--the blackbuck were at the back of the south end but the rest of teh animals were all spread out at the north end of the yard but not near enough the monorail to distinguish. The guide didn't mention them but he did mention the Axis Deer. Is there an entirely empty yard between the Mongolian Wild Horses and the Gaur? Saw a Gaur mating, or at least an attempt. Are there still Tahr in with the Markhor? I thought I saw some at the back, but the guide didn't mention them and they were far enough away I couldn't be sure. Happy was the only elephant out. Penny the rhino was out, complete with a face white from sunscreen. Peacocks crying and displaying everywhere. Also got to see an Andean Condor copulation. There were four brown bears on exhibit. All of the Geladas, ibex and hyraxes were on exhibit, but the Geladas stayed at the very top of the hill--saw just a male, a female and a very rambunctious youngster, also three ibexes, and a bunch of hyraxes. Seemed to be only three colobus on exhibit. Don't know how many they currently have. About half the cages in pheasant row were completely empty and unsigned. Chilean Flamingos were all missing--just a totally empty enclosure. Never saw that before. No male Nyala to be seen. The two male lions were on display. Were only three alpacas out at the Childrens' Zoo--thought there used to be more. Were at least five inside cages at the Mouse House empty and unsigned, along with all the outside cages. Butterfly garden seemed low on butterflies. The baby alligator on display at the Reptile House next to the big crocodilians is labeled a Chinese Alligator. Disappointingly limited selection of t-shirts at the main gift shop (wanted a good one for a friend). Two Amur tigers were out, one in each of the yards. Seem to be about half the bee eaters there used to be. Anyone know what the story is with the lone Emu and (apparently) lone Crowned Crane behind the World of Birds? The pheasant enclosure that was part of the Snow Leopard complex has been removed. The zoo had added Smews in both the Aquatic Birds House and WofB. That's as much as I can remember right now.

Although I do know that this post probably has absolutely nothing to do with the posts that were already posted here on the album before. But regardless of that, does anyone know if the Bronx Zoo still has any living Black-and-Rufous Elephant Shrews (Rhynchocyon petersi) left on public display as of this year (2021). And if not, what other species did the zoo decided to put on display and use instead as their replacement. I would certainly appreciate everyone’s response to this post if possible, so please do feel free to give out an update upon not just the individuals that might be still left at the Bronx. But also the entire, currently existing population of elephant shrews that are left in North America as a whole.

Sincerely, ~ @Austin the Sengi

I'm not sure about Bronx, but Philly still has a couple and you can usually spot at least one out in the rare mammal center.

There are only 12 now in AZA US Zoos with Bronx holding 3.1
1.0 "Henry" born: 7/11/2016 at NYBRONX
1.0 "Hansel" born: 10/29/2017 at NYBRONX
1.0 "Bart" born: 1/2/2018 at ROTTERDAM
0.1 "Bianca" born: 12/15/2016 at ROTTERDAM

Omaha and Philadelphia each have breeding animals along with Brookfield and Houston holding single males.

As far as what is on display versus off at the Bronx I would ask ThylacineAlive

Thank you very much for the information @Grant, I certainly knew in my mind that the Bronx would still have a few, but even still it’s nice to know that all four of them are still around with us today. And as for the individual that you mentioned that was living in Houston, the last time I went to the zoo in person was back in December of 2018, and since then I don’t recall Houston having any individuals left on public display at all, and if he’s still alive. Which exhibit on zoo grounds would he be on display at. (Although I do suspect it would have been Natural Encounters, but do correct me however if I am wrong)
