Marwell Wildlife Marwell Zoo News 2021

I believe all Marwell’s giraffe are hybrid (at least so I was told when I did the feeding experience there in 2019) but would be happily corrected if I’m wrong.

Interesting...the list I have is as follows(this could very out of date so please correct me if I'm wrong

Matilda - Dob 1997 born here purebred Rothschild

Jade - Dob 2009 brought in from abroad purebred Rothschild

Irsuluh - Dob 2008 born @ Woburn purebred Rothschild

Ruby - Dob 2012 born @ Marwell conceived @Woburn- Irsuluh's daughter

Makeda - Dob 2005 born @ Marwell hybrid

Christa - Dob 2008 born @ Marwell hybrid

No more Capybara at the zoo. The remaining two passed away during Lockdown.

Two new Servals have been spotted at the zoo just up from the bridge to the Tropical House.
The Servals arrived last year,I understand they will go in part of the Cheetah area, where Serval were kept in the past.

Have they only just gone on display? I can’t see any announcements about them and they’re not listed on the website.
Either that or I’ve just been very unlucky at spotting them

Serval have been kept in that area for some years, until the last one died and it was boarded up,a new pair arrived late last year and because the area was still closed of people did not know they were there, you are right Marwell no longer hold Capybara, they also no longer hold Peccary.

Hearing news about the servals and pigs etc gives me some more hope for Marwell's animal collection.
For sure this doesn't mean it will magically transform into a dream vision of Marwell or something, but I see this as a step in the right direction for Marwell, and hopefully similar can happen in the future.

Though I must wonder - with only a single cheetah left in the exhibit, when that animal eventually passes off, will there be a rebranding of the area?

I still haven’t managed to see the Servals and they’re not listed anywhere - do we have any further news about them?

If i visited tomorrow is there much i wouldnt see with indoor areas closed??
In some ways no,the Giraffe,Hippo,Okapi,Rhino, houses are closed but you can see the animals from outside, along with new species like Red River Hog,Banteng,Warty Pigs, but you would not see the tropical house.

1:0 Dorcas Gazelle was born on Mothers day. Have they been successful with this species before?
Dorcas Gazelle first arrived at Marwell in 2002 over the years they have bred many times at one time had a group of about thirty. In recent years lack of breeding and deaths mean they are down to a adult pair plus youngster born this year,I dont think they have a future at Marwell.

Heading to Marwell today any tips or pointers? Last time I visited was 2014
Think you might notice a slight diffrence !,as in 2004 they had over 100 mammals species, with nearly 900 mammals, look out for new species as I mentioned plus Dorcas Gazelle young, only one Nyala now, look out for Nile Lechwe in old Sitatunga house you may not see them.also Lesser Kudu and Arabian Oryx. have a good day.

Its such a shame to see animals which Marwell zoo was once so well known for fading away. Marwell had such a wonderful collection of antelopes and zebra. :(

Bloody hell, I had no idea they were only down to one Nyala. What happened?!
