Only 18 zoos with Andean Bears, 14 zoos with Sun Bears, 15 zoos with Sloth Bears...yikes! I hadn't realized how low the population had gotten for some of these species.

Thanks for the lists!

You're welcome! They were extremely easy to make. I was interested in learning about the individuals in these three shallow populations, so I thought others might me too.

Zootastic Park of Lake Norman, in NC, has a young sloth bear cub that they're doing cub petting with. It arrived 2-3 months ago.

are there sloth bears in private zoos because creation kingdom isn’t aza and black bears are usually the bear of choose for cub petting

One issue the sloth bear population is definitely going to face is the overrepresentation of the AmyxGoof line. This graphic (Sloth Bear Family Tree - ZooChat) shows all the bears that were descended from Amy and Goof, the long time residents of the Capron Park Zoo. I do know that for a few years now there has been talk if breeding Vicki, Capron's current resident, yet there has been a lot of problems finding an unrelated bear to pair her with. As soon as an unrelated bear is found, Vicki will likely be shipped out to another institution since our exhibit is no longer able to breed bears.

I need to get to Capron Park asap!

It really won't be a surprise if almost every species at the zoo is phased out in the next five years. Many of the exhibits for elderly individuals no longer fit the AZA standards for size and have been grandfathered in. The biggest ones fitting this are the lion and kangaroo exhibits, but also the cranes, servals, and a few others. The zoo is also planning to phase out all three lemur species in the near future because they are a pain to deal with in winter. It will be very interesting to see what happens in the future, as a lot of the exhibits will likely need to be re-used for smaller species. Hopefully there will be some new rarities included in this, but it will be a big loss to no longer have lions and bears.

Here is the recent (8/21/2021) North American Sloth Bear population.

Thanks @EsserWarrior for the updated list. It's astonishing to see how few major American zoos have Sloth Bears, as Capron Park, Creation Kingdom, Idaho Falls, Safari North, Sunset and Boise are all not widely known as big zoos. That leaves only a dozen major zoos in the USA with Sloth Bears and therefore not a lot of visitors see the species each year.
