Roger Williams Park Zoo Roger Williams Park Zoo News 2021

There are two new wildebeests at the zoo. Shades of Nature has the Albino Alligator along with an Albino Rat Snake, and baby alligators. Also, the new ostriches will be placed in the Auodad exhibit. The Bactrian camels are coming soon and are on loan for one year. I give credit to “I Am The Lion Rider’s” new video of the Roger Williams Park Zoo for this information.

Other information according to the video:

- The wildebeests are blue wildebeest Connochaetes taurinus
-
The zoo is trying to breed Masai giraffes, Matschie's tree-kangaroos, and snow leopards
- Relating to snow leopards, there is apparently a new snow leopard from another facility for breeding-related purposes?
- The zoo will have Bactrians from one year every year until they feel comfortable with building the tiger exhibit.
- According to one of the keepers, the next major update to the zoo is redoing the World of Adaptations building into an "Island" building.

Besides kangaroos (which I sincerely hope Roger Williams does not re-acquire), does anyone know of any other new species being considered for the Islands area?

I’m not sure. The zoo will probably keep some animals from the existing building that are from islands like the Komodo Dragon and the Tree Kangaroos. I also don’t hope that the zoo re-acquires kangaroos lol

I watched the video, and I highly doubt that will be the case. Based on current AZA standards, that wallaby habitat would be too small to house kangaroos. If they were to get kangaroos, almost if not all of the Outdoor trail would need to be devoted to them- which is the main reason I am against the idea. I'd much rather see the zoo focus on keeping other Island species- babirusa, clouded leopard, fishing cat, fossa, lemurs, aldabra tortoise, komodo dragon, small-clawed otter, little blue penguin, various birds, etc. Any of these would be good choices for an Islands exhibit, and I do not think kangaroos would be.

I agree with you. Does the zoo breed their babirusas, or no? If not, then the zoo should try to focus on breeding babirusa because of how rare they are.

Doesn’t the master plan outline consist of removing the babirusas and binturongs to make space for the kangaroo and wallaby walkthrough? If the zoo is following the outline then wouldn't the wallaby enclosure be getting an expansion?

That is what the plan appears to be. It looks like there will be the kangaroo/wallaby trail, and then an aviary. It looks like the trail entrance will be right outside the building entrance, so the babirusa and binturong will probably have to go

The plan does show the whole area becoming a kangaroo habitat. I am not disagreeing that that is the plan, but just stating that I disagree with the plan.

The zoo does not breed babirusa, nor have they ever to my knowledge. However, there is a need in the AZA for facilities to keep elderly animals, bachelor herds, and other non-breeding situations. Perhaps @Nicholas LionRider can better explain Roger Williams' babirusa situation.

An Albino Alligator has arrived at the Roger Williams Park.

Also here is some new information from IAmTheLionRider's June 2021 video:

- 2 (0.2) ostriches are now on exhibit with the aoudad.
- Also, most of the signage for the aoudad is replaced by the ostrich except for the informational board about where the aoudads live.
- The Aldabra and African spurred tortoises are finally back in their summer exhibit near the bison, red wolf, and giraffe exhibits.
- Update on the snow leopard. The female (which is named Ari) is for breeding purposes.
- The zoo has taken down signage for the tawny frogmouths. They used to share an exhibit with the laughing kookaburra but that doesn't seem like the case anymore.
- The African crowned crane habitat is closed for "under construction".

Spent my first day at this zoo, snow leopards were playful despite the heat, the cheetahs were really entertaining and the moon bears posed for pictures nicely. Really enjoyed the simple loop layout and the elevation changes.

Sat for a while trying to spot the Red Wolves when someone working for the zoo mentioned that a litter was born but the wolves ATE the first born?!?

Is that something wolves even do - I was caught off-guard as I wasn’t expecting a zoo employee to bring something like that up.
