Welsh Mountain Zoo Welsh Mountain Zoo News 2021

They've announced this morning the arrival of the baby chimpanzee and that she's been named Dalasi :)

"Let us introduce the newest member of our Chimpanzee family - a baby girl, Dalasi. She was born just weeks ago to Mum, Tuppence and Dad, Sixpence."

WMZ seem to be the only UK zoo now who breed chimps on anything like a regular basis.

Visited the zoo today for the first time in around 2 years with a few points to note:

- The new silk road snow leopard enclosure is a huge improvement on their previous exhibit with a good few visitor viewpoints. They are a little exposed to the elements though as I found out in this afternoon's downpour!

- I didn't see any greater rhea in the swamp wallaby exhibit, so unless they were off-show, the zoo may be down to their 3 Darwin's rhea.

- The red squirrels weren't on show as a new enclosure is being built for them next to the white-tailed sea eagles.

- I couldn't spot the hoopoe in the African aviary & it's sign had been removed however; I did see a red-billed quelea (which was signposted) & I can't remember seeing one of them in there before...

What happened to their female Camel clara ? Because ever since Elsa's arrival there has been no news or updates on her

They had their first litter in 2009 and the two cubs both died of an infection in the same year. Their second litter, Tom and Jessie, were born 28 April 2014. Jessie was moved to Paradise Wildlife Park in November 2015. The last information I have is that Tom, named in honour of Sir Tom Jones, was sent to Norden's Ark, Sweden in June 2017 and was renamed 'Arataan'.

Do any regular visitors know when Otilia passed away?

Just read a news report about the new enclosure, stating that a new pair will be sourced, with enough space for the new pair and remaining individual, so exciting times ahead.

No date given, this was the bulletin: We are sad to report the death, after a very short illness, of our old female snow leopard ‘Otilia’. She was sixteen years old, which was a good age for the species. As we knew that both our snow leopards were now elderly (the male Szechuan is also sixteen) we had already made inquiries to the co-ordinator for the breeding programme to see if young animals are available from other zoos. We have identified a young male in the UK and a young female in France and we are now waiting for the final arrangements to be completed.
