Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo News 2021

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) has announced the return of Edinburgh Zoo’s Christmas Nights, alongside a brand-new family friendly Halloween event running in October.

In partnership with NL Productions, the wildlife conservation charity will welcome guests on two spectacular evening light trails throughout October, November and December 2021.

Both events will feature magical projections and illuminating experiences with full details to be revealed later this year:

I’m planning to go to Edinburgh next month, does anyone knows if the giraffes will be on show by then? And this will be my first visit since January 2015 and I still beat myself up for not spotting the rhinoceros, anteaters and tapirs, what path should I take to ensure I successfully tick them off my list of missed/no-shows

The rhinos and tapirs should be easy, as long as you go up to the tapir house. Both rhino house are open but they'll probably be outside, the second house requires a little finding but I'll leave that to you to find it. The anteaters will be a bit harder, I would recommend going into their cave section of the house where you are most likely to find them. I don't know if they have set a date for the giraffe opening but mid-June is I think when they said.
 
Visited today to see the new Giraffe's for the first time. The development is superb and something Edinburgh has been crying out for since the last Giraffe's left. The guide taking us around (we were on a members tour) advised that all the new Giraffe's are actually related to the last Giraffe's that were at Edinburgh, with the new boys either being Grandsons or Great Grandsons to those that were previously there. I've added media to the gallery to show the new exhibit. The Giraffe's currently only have access to the two hard standing area's as the paddocks are getting some final maintenance before they will be ready. The exhibit opens fully to all visitors from tomorrow.

Hello! Does anyone know how the breeding program with the tigers is going?
I was looking into highland wildlife park to get my baby tiger fix but it's so far away, I was hoping Edinburgh may have some joy soon!

They have not got any cubs at Edinburgh, the enclosures for the tigers keep rotating so I don’t think they are going to try and breed them any time soon.
 
Development update from Edinburgh:

"While most of the zoo is now open to visitors, our Wee Beasties building must remain closed until social distancing restricted are relaxed and our primate walkthroughs are closed because our lemurs and saki monkeys have an increased risk from Covid-19.

Other areas may also be closed temporarily while we carry out some exciting new changes – Brilliant Birds will soon be home to a fantastic new mystery species (all will be revealed soon…) and most of our lorikeets have moved out to make way for a new meerkat experience area later this year."

I believe the "new mystery species" will be the pair of Linné's two-toed sloth that have been off show for quite some time now.
