Folly Farm News from Folly farm

You are partially correct YWP did used to have 2 hybrids both of which arrived from WMSP.
They were Jasper and Behanzin.

Jasper died in 2014 aged 14 and
Behanzin died earlier this year aged 16.
How many and which are left now?

How many and which are left now?

@Embu 's info above is correct unless there have been any very recent changes - 2.0 Reticulated and 1.0 Rothschild's are on-site currently.

I believe that the remaining 3:0 at YWP are 2:0 Reticulated called Jengo and Palle and 1 Rothschild called Jambo(who was born at Woburn I think)

Great news for both collections. Anyone know who Rudi's mother is? I know Shrimp's mother was Jemima.

If I remember correctly Rudi's mother was/is Nora, I don't have an exact date of birth but I believe it was around January 2018, I'm not sure who their father was/is but Folly Farm states they are half brothers. I have no date of birth for Shrimp, it is difficult tracking animals from collections with larger herds as they rarely announce birth dates of specific individuals. The article written by Folly Farm is interesting as it states:

"How do you transport a giraffe?
Glad you asked! The only transporters of giraffe are based in the Netherlands so it takes a bit of co-ordination. Luckily, Cross Border Animal Services had a few other moves to do in the UK so it all fell into place. They travel in a trailer similar to a horse box but a bit taller obvs! Before they arrived with us our keepers blocked up the gaps between the bars to create solid walls in the giraffe house so if they got spooked they didn’t run into the bars."

This could indicate more giraffe moves are on the cards unless they are moving other species around the UK.

Going off the first letter of Shrimp's mother's name I'm guessing she was born in 2013 but no idea who to? Becky's final calf was born the same year and he is/was called Noah.

Regarding the Cross Border Services they could be referring to the recent moves to Edinburgh but don't rule out more surplus males being moved around.

The father will be the current bull Thorn although at 20yrs this year he may well be retired and the herd is on breeding hold as from 2018.

I am unsure of the current breeding situation at Longleat as I was aware they had been told to hold off breeding when I last visited a few years ago but I was unsure if this was Longleat only or region wide, I do know that a while after I visited a calf was born at Chester but that was likely sired before breeding was halted, I am unsure of any recent rothschild giraffe births in the UK but I am a little out of date. Thorn has been retired from breeding, I cannot remember if he has been castrated physically/chemically but I do know he has been retired from the breeding programme as he was very successful at Longleat and he had also sired a few females? at Chester. I am not aware of any breeding history prior to Chester as I cannot remember off the top of my head what age he arrived there.

I wasn't sure whether to continue in this thread or start a new Folly Farm 2022 thread.

Anyway, I have just come back from there and had a great day, quite a few changes since my last visit in March 2020. It was also very, very quiet.

There were no signs of the Armadillos anymore, I don't know if they have gone out of them or what but there were Vietnamese Pheasants and Barbary Doves in its old enclosure.

On the old Fossa area, they are building a new enclosure and it said Welsh Wild Cats on a themed cat board.

Like the Armadillo's, I don't know if the Cusimanse have moved on or have gone out of them as they had Banded Mongoose in its old enclosure.

The Tropical Trails is looking better than ever and it's my first time seeing the new Sloth area in there.

The walkthrough African aviary was closed due to current bird flu so I couldn't really see what is in there.

The 2 young male Giraffes that arrived last year look so tiny compared to the 2 resident males but I am sure they will grow in time.

All in all, its a lovely little zoo, very clean and tidy throughout. Not just the zoo, but also the farm areas, funfair and playground so plenty there for all ages.

Surely Welsh wild cats should be Scottish wild cats?

According to Zootierliste the cusimanse left in February, armadillos are still listed.

I am pretty sure it said Welsh Wild Cat on a sign. We shall have to wait and see when the enclosure is complete and see what will be going in there.

Either the Armadillo's are recently no longer in the collection or could be off-show somewhere. I also didn't see any sign of their Reeves Muntjac.

I do think that Folly Farm needs a bit of an update on Zootierliste but sadly I don't have a more updated list. I think a few bird species have left the collection.

Does anybody know if the collection still hold Chinese Muntjac? Their former enclosure in the Asian Adventure now houses Cranes and I couldn't see any signage for them anywhere.

Congratulations to the Folly Farm team.

The baby was born within the last week, but she was in very early pregnancy when she was transported here 13 months ago. I guess nobody really knew.

I certainly wasn't expecting to see a baby Camel here as I know they were not wanting anymore due to lack of indoor space.

The Ocelots are leaving the collection this weekend as part of the European breeding programme at the Cornwall Nature Conservancy.

The current enclosure will also be getting demolished and refurbishment for a new enclosure will be taking place and I can't wait to hear what the plans are.

The baby Camel "Cletus" has now been reunited with his mother Delilah but still getting a few bottle feeds by his keepers.
