North American Asian Elephant Population 2021

I don’t know if anyone else has reported this already, but I’ve recently seen some pictures of Rose-tu at the Oregon zoo and she looks quite rotund, with semi-noticeable mammary glands (especially compared to Chendra and Shine). Is it a far-fetched idea that maybe Samson and Rose-tu successfully mated and there is a calf on the way?
I’ve noticed that as well. That’s definitely not a far-fetched idea since Samson arrived in spring 2018 and both him and Rose are proven breeding animals. Since she has visible mammary glands, there’s a good chance she is pregnant since Lily passed away nearly 3 years ago and there are no other calves within the herd meaning no calf would have suckled from her in a pretty long time.

I just this videoshe does seem round enough and her breasts are full enough and @NOVAElephantEnthusiast said he does know about quite a few pregnancies my guesses would be Mali, Rozana, Rani (St.Louis), Shanti, and Rose-tu. And possibly Rudy, Maliha, Jade, and Sunny

My only confusion is that Chendra’s pregnancy was announced so early, while Rose is more likely to be successful and no announcement has been made. It’s possible they don’t want to hold their breath, but I’m still confused in that respect. Also, does anyone have any idea how far along she could be?

Maybe around 12 to 16 months

Judging by their consistency, Mali is likely pregnant, but not due before the end of the year as she gives birth consistently every four years. Shanti is still likely in her first trimester with her three year consistency. Rozana gave birth in 2012, 2015, and 2018. Since she and Albert are a proven pair it’s very likely she’s due this year. Another possibility is Lilly at ALS, she conceived her last calf Imke five months after giving birth to Luna. Since Imke is around nine months old she could be pregnant as well. Just a theory though.

Actually Lily gave birth to Imke 27 months after Luna, and she could be possibly be pregnant again and due in early 2023 or late 2022.

Thank you! That could be why nothing has been officially stated yet. I wouldn’t be surprised if something was announced by the end of the year though.
I wouldn't be too suprised if they don't announce pregnancy at all. They have had a lot of bad publicity lately regarding their elephants and though Rose is a proven breeder, there are still chances things will go wrong so they might just wait till the calf is born to announce anything.
Phoebe’s calf FINALLY has a name. The calf was named by a donor family in honor of their mother, Frances. The calf has been officially named Frankie.
To be honest, that really wasn't worth the wait.

That wouldn’t be surprising if they didn’t, the Oregon zoo elephants can’t breathe without being protested about.

As far as Frankie goes, I’m with you on that. Sweet and all, but…

Rozana gave birth in 2012, 2015, and 2018.
Actually, Rozana gave birth in 2009, 2013, and 2018. ABQ usually annouces her pregnancies about a year before her duedate so my guess is they will make an announcment before the end of this year with a duedate of sometime between summer to fall of 2022.

Huh, I don’t know where my dates came from… sorry bout that. Your prediction sounds likely though.

Even more exciting than Rozanna's inevitable pregnancy, Jazmine is eight this year. Given that ABQ is fairly progressive with their breeding standards, I'd say there's an excellent chance that she will be artificially inseminated anytime between now and the next two years.
I wonder if a new bull will be brought in for her and Rozana. Jazmine is related to both uncle Albert and brother Thorn. Plus Albert isn’t even a genetically valuable bull for such an invaluable herd as he is the son of Calvin (Bandara x Kamala) and Lilly (Motek x Warda) while Rozana is two founders only calf.

Such a shame Alice was never allowed the opportunity to breed again, they could have moved her back to San Diego to mate with Ranchipur which would have gave the both of them many more descendants. A 2011 video shows that he was still able to mount females just goes to show you how much AZA and the SPP failed him, and other genetically valuable bulls like Sneezy who was never allowed to mate after 2009

Fingers crossed ABQ does AI Jazmine in the near future! If they do and a healthy calf is born, ABQ will be the first to have a four generational herd (in the US), unless STL beats them to it (hopefully they do!).
