Zoo Duisburg Duisburg Zoo news

For a rewilding project in Argentina Zoo Duisburg send 2020 a female to Parque Iberá. This female - Alondra - was born at Duisburg in 2011 and at Parque Iberá she was paired with male Coco. Now this pair has produced the first litter of 3 cubs of Giant otters born in Argentina since 1940 ! The young have been sexed as being 2 male and 1 female.

According to Facebook, the new caribbean-themed room at the end of th aquarium is now open. It currently holds a pair of cuban rock iguana (another male should follow) (Cyclura nubila), some cuban hutias (Capromys pilorides) that already bred this year, and at least one socorro dove (Zenaida graysoni) using the space overhead. There are also some smaller terrariums, one containing Graham's anole (Anolis grahami), one containing some species of leaf insect and the other a snake. The FB site claims its a Cuban Boa (Chilabothrus angulifer), though on ZTL it has been claimed for a while the zoo holds Jamaican boa instead, (Chilabothrus subflavus), so I can't tell which is true.

It's a Jamaican Boa and the leaf insects are Giant Katydids. They are housed in the same terrarium. Something probably got jumbled up in the press release.

Maybe I remembered the info about it being one or two terrariums incorrectly, but I'm sure they misidentified the snake then. Thanks for the info!

The oldest Seal, a blind female, has been PTS after a decline in health and an inoperable spinal cord compression. She was 46. The zoo's remaining two young female seals (Babsy and Blue) will be sent to another facility, and Duisburg will go out of keeping seals

Good, there old enclosure was extremly outdated and smal. Now the zoos has only 1 true eye sore left with the Äquatorium

As announced, the last two seals have left on Wednesday. They didn't have to be transported a long way, as they now live at Tierpark Bochum.

In February Duisburg and Zoom Erlebniswelt exchanged female Nepalese red pandas (Ailurus fulgens) in the hopes that both zoos can form suitable breeding couples.

In April 2 Indian crested porcupine (Hystrix indica) were born.

The Paraguayan tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla straminea) that was born in the beginning of this year is a female.

In June 2 Common emus (Dromaius novaehollandiae) hatched.

On the 6th of May 2 Siberian tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) were born to mother Dasha.
In July the gender of the newborns was revealed, a male and a female!

As mentioned in the Dierenpark Amersfoort thread, the two Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus) males (*2017) were send to Dierenpark Amersfoort in June.

In October 2 Pink-backed pelicans (Pelecanus rufescens) hatched.

Thanks for posting - I had been thinking about what was going on there the last few days. I believe they still show Baby on their map.

A real good news as the manatee facilities in Europe are all full and no new exhibit is planned at the moment. I hope some Beauval animals will arrive to avoid a little bit more space for those remaining.

Yes, that is great news, though it was stated from the beginning that manatees would (or should) eventually move in after the death of the botos, I'm glad it's happening now. Let's hope the Rio Negro house will be back open then, I believe it's been closed off since early 2020 now...

In late November, female koala Sydney arrived from Zoo Dresden. She is now sometimes on show and they hope she successfully mates with the male. If that happens, she and the young will return to Dresden in early 2022.

Now you mention the koala house, does somebody have any news about the tree kangaroos? Are they coming back? It was reported in this topic that they were getting a new outdoors enclosure.

Sorry, I haven't heard anything about tree kangaroos. When I visited in August, I didn't see any construction going on either.

In other news, the female southern ground hornbill has gotten a new partner. The last offspring from Duisburg went to Ostrava/CZ and in return a five-year old male arrived in Duisburg.
