Yorkshire Wildlife Park Yorkshire Wildlife Park News 2021

A keeper there (who shall remain anonymous) commented that gorillas are a future possibility.

On the Chester Zoo website, they've stated that, apparently, the minister in question (Zach Goldsmith) has denied the reports and has stated that the Government do not intend to ban elephants in UK zoos.

However, I think they've said YWP are probably never going to have elephants in the past.

Gorrila would be amazing in an african forest area.

Can we please have a thread on zoo news first and another to keep the rife speculations in check?

BTW: Happy for U.K. Zoo fans polar bears seem on the up. I do wonder though how this will develop further beyond HWP and YWP. Will be interesting to see if other U.K. Zoos will take on polar bears and equally how EAZA will deal with increased interest here.

Lastly, May I remind you that the latest import is more or less due in good part by strong anti zoo sentiments towards Antibes Marine which is not necessarily such a good thing and this following on from the site being primarily a marine mammal location.

I personally view the whole anti dolphinaria and anti marine mammal brigade advances in both the public and political domain with extreme concern and discontent. In my view, that kind of attitude for merely a fraction of all marine mammals existing is not going to save one dolphin, orca or other whale species from extinction nor will it improve the capacity to deal with rescuing drowning, sick or stranded marine mammals.

I don't think keeping dolphins and other cetaceans in captivity has ever contributed to conservation. The cruel and barbaric conditions they have historically been kept in were awful and I firmly believe that the advancement of public opinion and government action that has reduced significantly the number kept should be applauded!

It is my understanding from several conversations with different keepers over several years that there will NOT be elephants at YWP. Time to stop the speculation.
I do however have it on good authority from other sources outside of YWP that it has been planned for several years for a collection of gorillas to be homed here.
Seems pointless to keep speculating on different species as YWP always do things at their own pace and announce it well after everyone has either seen the animals in question or the animals place of origin make an announcement!

Had a nice visit today saw some of the new animals the sea lion area was closed of though, saw flocke and her Cubs, managed to see the dik diks, saw the bush dogs and I have recently read somewhere that they came from twycross just wondered if anyone could shed any light on this ?

Had my first visit today and was suitably impressed, in fact I'd say I was completely blown away by certain exhibits and enclosures.! The place is BIG and some of the enclosures are Whipsnade worthy in size and scope, pictures really do not do that Leopard enclosure justice for a start.

The Sea Lions were showing well and it really is one of the most impressive pinniped exhibits I've ever seen. Project Polar was another revelation as it's the first time I've seen Polar Bears in a modern enclosure rather than the old style exhibits of Dudley and Chester back in my youth, it makes such a difference to see these huge animals with plenty of space.

Other highlights were all the nerdy species, a few lifers (Beisa, Guinea Baboons, Roloways) and finally getting to see YWP in general. Lowlights are all the walking between exhibits as there are big chunks without a lot to see, especially crossing from the new part of the zoo to the old, the tapir exhibit was a bit bland compared to the rest of the collection, and the Hyaenas were a (not surprising) no-show. Other than those minor gripes I can't complain and had a pretty good time. :)

Someone does need to let them know that aviaries aren't a terrible thing though as I feel the place could support a few large walkthroughs if management ever want to diversify from the Big Stuff! ;)

Glad to hear the sea lions were back outside when I visited it July they were locked in so when I asked a staff member they said that the pump was broken and it had been for over a week but the couldn't get it started

A long time ago they did used to house several bird of prey species and they would do regular demonstrations in the area that is now project polar 1 if memory serves, the bird enclosures used to be in the woodland area I think but that is going back a good few years now. They've never seemed interested in birds since and I think some of them might have been sent to Bridlington but again I could be wrong.

The sea lions were shut for a couple of weeks due to a part of the filtration system malfunctioning and them being unable to source the needed part, it also took them a few days to ensure the chemical make up of the water was suitable, which I am glad for as I have seen some horror stories when the water is not right. I am also glad that they did not rush to reopen the exhibit to make sure it was right for the animals despite the several unhappy comments I heard when I visited.

Does anyone know if there's a reason that a few Emu are kept in the African Plains exhibit with the Elands, Lechwes and Oryxes, etc? I went a few weeks back now and there were I think two in there. Didn't make sense to me as Emus come from Australia.

Also, does anyone know if the Sitatunga are still kept at YWP? zootierliste says they are but I did,t see them in the wetlands area where their old exhibit was or in the African Plains, obviously, they could have been inside or something and I'd just missed out on seeing them.

Elvis the emu has been there since the beginning so I think they just moved him into the African Plains to live out his days at the park with the company of other animals.
He also believes he's an ostrich so make of that what you will. :p

The sitatungas haven’t been there for ages as far as I am aware, their enclosure kept flooding.

IIRC he’s a remnant of Brockholes Farm, the precursor to YWP and he’s stuck around ever since. It was probably easier to put him in the African plains enclosure rather than an enclosure of his own. I guess it would have made more sense geographically to put him in with the wallabies but not all zoos are willing to put them in walkthrough enclosures as they can be dangerous.

Visited here yester day for the second time and had an absolutely amazing day. I managed to get around twice and the only no shows of the day was the maned wolves, agouti and Binturong.
Starting at the top the Bush dogs were being fed so we're very active. The tapir were asleep and the maned wolves as I said were a no show however I saw these on my very first visit so I didn't really mind. At the end I the tapir were in the house and I still didn't see any maned wolves or Bush dogs.
The sea lions are my all time favourite animal and I think their enclosure is by far now the best in the UK. Today they were in the smaller pool and they younger boys were very playful. They were also still in the smaller pool at the end of the day. I was kind of hoping they would have gone into the bigger area but never mind maybe next time.
I caught a glimpse of the red pandas through the trees at the start and the end. No Binturong were visible and the smooth coated otters were in the pond.
Gelada on both occasions were by the house and I saw one hyena in the smaller enclosure and at the end I saw one in the big enclosure and one in the smaller one. Are they separated for a reason because I was under the impression that they were a breeding pair and also is the cub still there?
The tigers were asleep in the morning but by the afternoon they were very active and came right up to the fence.
We were very lucky with leopards today as in the morning we saw one at the far end of the large enclosure and in the afternoon one came right up to the fence. A carnivore keeper who went past said that we were extremely lucky to see that because they are a very shy animal. Another family who were looking at the leopard said that they have been going to the park since it first opened and they never saw the leopard until that moment.
7 camels were in the reserve. Does anyone know how many they have?
Flocke and cubs were playing in the pool and were more active than the other boys which is a contrast to the last visit.
Giraffes were in the larger reserve with the other species. I like this area however I think they could do with a few more of the existing species in there or a few different species as I saw 2 zebra, 2 Oryx, about 15 Lechwe which I thought was a good size, 1 ostrich, 4 or 5 Eland and the emu. Possible suggestions I have are forest buffalo, ankole, wildebeest etc. Does anyone else have any suggestions. I saw all 3 rhino.
Like my first visit I saw 6 lions. Does anyone know who is in which pride as I know thwlere is a name board but I guess it has changed since some deaths have occurred.
Meerkat were active and were looking up at the birds.
I like the baboon and painted dog area. The baboons were quite playful especially the youngsters and I saw a small baby under its mother. There were 5 painted dogs which last time I visited in July there were just 2. Does anyone know what is happening here.
Lemurs and visayan pigs were active.
The Wallabys seemed to have a few babies with them.
I like the South America area. I saw 1 cotton top tamarin but no babies and also saw one armadillo sunbathing. Anteater was asleep in side and I saw 3 howler monkeys. I think the walk through is a great idea and the saki monkeys were very active bouncing through the trees. The giant otters have a very nice enclosure now all the plants are grown and I prefer the outdoor area to Chesters but the indoor is a bit of a let down. Also, these giant otters are very vocal. I never heard the ones at chester make any noises.
The boys at project polar were quite u active today which I expected as it was very hot.
I saw one rollaway monkey up a tree.
The dik diks were at the back of the enclosure lay down.
I saw both okapis, one was out and the other inside.
It was another very good day at Yorkshire wildlife park and this is now my favourite zoo which I have visited
P.S I hope you didn't find this post boring lol

They used to have Ankole in the plains exhibit but don't anymore. They had them up to some point after 2015 (according to a guidebook I have from then) also there was once addax in there but I think they've gone as well. Would be cool to have some forest buffalo, perhaps they could source some from West Midlands Safari Park. Although there was an incident regarding a forest buffalo sadly goring a zebra at WMSP so perhaps that would make YWP hesitant to get any.

Also you're very lucky to have seen the leopards! I've been 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2021 and never seen them!

Beautiful Drake.
In answer to some of you questions, the lions are in three pairs - Maria and Simba (mother and son), Ares and Julie, Carla and Crystal (sisters and also sisters to Julie). The hyenas are Granada and Speedy and their son Maverick. Speedy has been kept apart since Maverick’s birth. There are three Roloways, can’t remember parents names but baby is Kamasi. The binterong are very often a no show but here is one.56EB5F5E-A8A4-4FC6-8E72-550E7EFDC350.jpeg
