North American Asian Elephant Population 2021

The article says four of the Cardens cows will also be retired at the facility within the next five years -- would that presumably be Betty, Janice, Vickey, and Cindy? Are Dutchess and Liz still alive?
Dutchess and Liz are both still alive at the George Garden Circus International.

Has there been any announcement from ALS about their three new calves yet? Or even an update on Imke since last December?
Nope. I even tried emailing them about it but no response. I really hope they announce the births soon, I'm starting to lose hope they ever will! Though I don't necesarily blame them, I feel like they got attacked when they announced Imke's birth last year after reading some of the comments on their social medias.

You’re right, they did seem to get a little more negative attention for Imke’s birth than the other births. Plus Emily had one of the calves and we know she’s had some controversy… so I could see them waiting for that to blow over. I DMed them on Instagram and they left me on seen, so I guess they aren’t going to say much until they’re ready.

Sheesh, they sure are avoiding saying anything about it! They aren't really making the best impression by leaving you on read

There is no harm in informing the people that reach out to them and ask about it because most if not all the time those people are zoo enthusiasts and they aren't going to go and tell the whole world about it or something. Anyways, ig their reluctance to say anything is pretty justifiable.

I agree, I just laughed, but I get the feeling that their social media team was decreased during COVID. Even so, I wouldn’t blame them for not responding, I know they sad that they wait at least a month after birth before announcing a birth, so maybe one of the calves is experiencing issues so they announcement is being delayed. I thought maybe they were waiting for another birth, but unless Piccolo is pregnant (which I highly doubt) or Johnson mated one of his daughters then there aren’t any females that could be due soon. I guess we’ll keep having to wait and see.

Why would anyone be bashing the latest births at ALS? Especially Imke and Emily. I am out of the loop there apparently.

I am being to worry about the calves in videos I have only seen at least two, and only George and the older calves 2015-2018 are on public display with no site of of the older breeding females and adolescents.

One would assume that Piccolo Nellie, and Hannah would be on public display so maybe Nellie and Hannah are pregnant.

There's nothing to worry about. ALS has a massive herd with limited display space, and some of their animals never end up in the main display yard.

In addition, as cows age and matrilines grow, there's likely to be some tension between the different family groups, changing up who is displayed with who.

African Lion Safari has always been “hated on” by animal rights activists because of their elephants being in free contact among other reasons. And Emily was one of the cows that was supposed to move to Fort Worth, so ig there might be controversy there.

Also, Emily is Johnson's (the breeder) half sister.

Yeah, I know. I doubt the general public knows that though, and if Johnson is the sire they most definitely wont announce that he and Emily are siblings. She may have been AI’d though, I’m really hoping she was.

On my last Visit they said, that they rarely ever put Johnson out for display, and they only have a few outdoor paddocks and often Johnson takes up one of them leaving on 2 or 3 left to use, so they are tight on space.

Another possible reason aside from the move is the federal government’s possible legislation- which would “ban” elephants, and primates (apes, monkeys, orangutans) in Canadian zoos.
Essentially it seeks to impose the same breeding bans and eventual phase out rules that currently are on cetaceans.
I haven’t heard any updates on it but governing like this would hinder ALS’s very successful elephant program and could effect their herd structure long term.

Has anyone heard any updates about the import of Trong Nhi and Nhi Linh from the Netherlands? It’s been a while since anything has been said by Rotterdam zoo.
