African Elephants in Europe 2021

Sadly most of the uploaded footage from this year shows only three cows...one adult and two adolescents, older footage almost always shows all five cows together.

I've noticed some individuals of this species have passed away following changes to their environment or husbandry made after what would be many years of stasis. I wonder if this is a contributing factor to premature death if there are underlying health issues present.

It would appear over the winter that the enclosure space was reduced while the extension was constructed, which would have likely caused some noise and disruption, also the younger cows are reaching sexual maturity which could have caused group dynamics to shift, given the older cows were unrelated.

It's great and all that the enclosure has been increased in size with areas of softer substrate, but the none of the publicity mentions the house so it would appear to be the same indoor facility as before and likely not a modern, soft floor, although I don't know if the group is confined at night.

It's encouraging to see Jassa being mixed at times with the cows, it's possible he'll have more success with fewer mature females in the group, but ideally there would be an exchange if there isn't a successful mating in the next few years. I wonder if the EEP would provide another bull unless certain standards were met, particularly with the house, so unless there have been off-show improvements perhaps this explains the lack of movement here.

Jassa needed to move, like, five years ago. It obviously isn't working out between him and the cows for whatever reason, and they are absolutely just dragging their feet and wasting time at this point. especially considering he spent so much time in with them, if one of them was to get pregnant, it would've happened by now.

9 year old bull Rungwe transferred from Zoo Magdeburg to Zoo Gyor yesterday

The zoo also announced that Mwana would move soon, and later two or maybe even all the bulls. The zoo wants to build a breeding group and either keep one bull or get a new breeding bull. I wonder where they get breeding cows from. Maybe Wuppertal, Vienna or Valencia?

Where is this written that Mwana will move? I saw it in the comments that somebody wrote all elephants would leave but this is not stated in the text. The text on their website quotes the EEP studbook keeper that changes to the enclosure are necessary (note that this is a brandnew enclosure...) and "further elephants" have to leave but I did not find any of them explicity mentioned. Sending Mwana away would have its pros and cons - she's almost 40 years and hasn't lived elsewhere, so it's a tough change; on the other hand she lived in a tiny enclosure nearly all of her life and now is the lonely cow who lives in the tiny bull section of the new enclosure, so a move anywhere else can almost only improve her living conditions if she adjusts to a bigger place at all after 40 years in tiny places.

Possibly Mwana has lived somewhere else in her lifespan of almost 40 years.

Zuchtpläne im Zoo Magdeburg: Nach Elefant Rungwe muss auch Mwana weg
This is stated in this article. I think the move will be better for her, because she lives alone in Magdeburg. It will be difficult for her, but I believe she will do it.

@Elephantelephant it would be a dream come true if Jambo moves back to an English Zoo! I followed his plight on Zoo Days that was filmed at Colchester Zoo and presented by Konnie Huq. Ever since I have always wanted to meet him in person.I secretly hope that Jambo moves to the new and enlarged African Elephant enclosure at West Midlands Safari Park.
Do you know how I can see/watch zoo days as I didn't watch it before as I am only 13 and I am obsessed with CZ and their history after reading The Story Of Colchester Zoo released on their 50th birthday

Has Tembo actually bred naturally before though? I know he has had a number of calves, however as far as I'm aware most, if not all have been through artificial insemination. That said, transferring him definitely wouldn't hurt either way. He's not doing anything at Colchester has is, would be a good influence for Sutton, and would offer natural breeding chances again to five.
He has bred naturally 5 times- once successfully with Rosa and 4 times unsuccessful with Zola

I honestly feel bad for Zola out of all of the three calves she produced they were all stillborn they were all bull calves with could have expanded Tembo's bloodline as these sons could have gave many more descendants

True she still lives with Tembo

But I wonder why the breeding stopped Opal had a stillborn in 2010 with the sire being Jack (Stoso) through AI , and Tanya had Kito back in 2002 so in theory Tanya and even the late Rosa could have delivered live offspring

I agree I know when Rosa had Jambo she gained problems with her reproductive system, Zola was a very prolific breeder but had problems with pregnancy. At the moment all elephants can't be together as a group because of social issues. Tanya and Opal have weirdly only become pregnant through A.I despite living at CZ with Tembo for 23 years. I do understand speculation about Tembo but as a Colchester zoo Stan I hope we get some more females and breed without getting rid of any of our current historic elephants. Though if Tembo had to go I would appreciate Jambo or maybe even Abu.

I believe the plan with Abu is for him to breed with Tana and her mother Pori for a few more years, and then sending him off to Zlin
