I think many euthanasias are scheduled, especially if the animal is elderly or has been sick for a while. I'm currently interning at a zoo in Texas and most euthanasias thus far have been scheduled 1-3 days in advance.
As for the vehicles in the public paths, I can't recall another zoo having so many vehicles or golf carts around during my visits.
Also, the pelicans in the savanna yard are a surprising and kind of odd addition in my opinion. I guess hooray for the new species though?

Not the first time this has happened. I'm sure many remember the 2008 incident where Zero the polar bear was stuck in the moat of the exhibit for over two weeks. An absurd situation that's almost comical in hindsight. It's beyond me why they would want to put another bear in that exhibit regardless of species. It's going to demolished in a few years anyway so may as well leave it empty.

I get that, and how many more animals need to suffer in this space until something is done? Could this be part of the reason why Snow Lilly decreased so quickly?

It's not the second time it's happened, either! Starting the think this exhibit may be a bit outdated and in need of replacing :rolleyes:
 
I was at the zoo on Saturday and one of the elephants (the one without tusks) has a very obvious limp. Does anyone know what’s going on with her?

When it comes to animal injuries and death, I recommend asking the zoo on social media instead of here. You will probably get better and more accurate information that way.
 
Looking ahead to next year, it appears that prices are increasing again in April. The zoo is increasing a program called Wild Lights evening events from 10 to 25 days. A new 4D experience is being added somewhere in the zoo and a rock wall is being added to the zip line experience. Lastly it appears that one of the parking lots will be repaved next year as well.


Other things to note, is that they are in the planning stages for the renovation of the welcoming experience at the zoo. This includes reconfiguring the admission/entrance areas, in hopes to reduce the traffic flow upon getting into the zoo (making the parking where you grab a ticket and then walk up to the entrance to the zoo where you pay for everything there). It would also include bringing the Humboldt penguin experience back in line with current standards. This would include a new filtration system, indoor holding facilities and a nesting area, and a more expansive outdoor viewing area for the public. Possibly finished in 2025.


Lastly, the zoo is hoping that they can request the funds for the last phase of Adventure Africa in the 2023 budget. They are currently awaiting the Zoological Society for their portion of the project, once they have their portion, construction shall follow shortly. So it looks like 2024 will be when the new exhibit debuts.


On a side note, did anyone else notice that in the rendering of the last stage of Adventure Africa, that they current outdoor space for the tigers also has it that it will be shared with jaguars too?

That sounds like a recipe for disaster. Does anyone have any backstory or reason for this even being considered?

I think that the outdoor tiger exhibit is larger then the current outdoor jaguar exhibit. So I think that they will be rotating both cats through the exhibit throughout the day/week. Of course not at the same time though.

Ah, I thought it was an idea of a mixed exhibit. An exhibit rotation could work, but couldn't it provide issues of confusion as these species will attract lots of guests? (e.g. maps not always showing the correct species in the correct exhibit).

Shouldn't be a problem. Philly rotates most of their big cats through their different exhibits, 4+ species. They just need good signage, and electronic displays that get changed help as well.
 
A friend of went to the zoo today and said she saw keepers load a rhino into a crate that was headed for Oregon. Anyone have any more info about this?

Called it! 0.1 Jozi is headed to Oregon as a potential mate for 1.0 King who recently arrived at Oregon himself.
