Milwaukee County Zoo Milwaukee County Zoo news 2021

Does that leave Milwaukee rhinoless?
Yes, for 3 years potentially. As they begin to build out phase 3 they couldn’t have rhinos housed during construction. This has been apart of the plan, it just sucks that milwaukee is not ready to begin construction for at least another year.

I've been wondering why the hippos haven't been mentioned as having to leave as well for this, is there gonna be part of the building that'll hold the hippos while construction goes on or what?

Exactly that. The "Hippo Home" (or "Hippo Spa" as it was recently rebranded) is being maintained and integrated into the new building and they can be housed there during the winter while their new on exhibit indoor quarters are being built.

I feel like they will have to move at some point too. The artist rendering of the new space appears that the hippo home may get additional updates, so they may have to go somewhere else.

Also with the rhino leaving, it’s not a surprise, she’s has too valuable genes. She was suppose to be already attempting to be a mother, the zoo was already suppose to have this whole area already done. The lack of getting things done, and the rhino gaining up their in age, though still young, the SSP needed to take action and get her in a place where they don’t waste another year.

Went to the zoo today and it hit me, with the rhino and the polar bear gone, what's left for that area? Yes I know that they have been using the old elephant exhibit for Patti the hippo but its blocked off and or viewing very difficult. Are they going to find something to fill that space or leave it empty? There is just a lot of space empty, from the camels down to the giraffes and then polar bear exhibit in itself. I realize that construction is still aways away but are they going to have nothing there?

Also does anyone know when they are going to start construction on the updated pool for the elephants?

I forgot to mention there are some animals in quarantine, not sure if they are coming or going. hopefully they are coming…

1 male and 1 female timber rattlers
1 female red panda
2 male and 2 female rock hoppers
? Cheetahs (not sure why they didn’t post the genders)

Did the young red panda leave? Did it say cheetah or cheetahs?

Not sure if the red panda left, but wouldn’t they normally quarantine the animal at the receiving institution? And yes they said cheetahs with (?) by where they would say the gender(s).

Receiving institutions quarantine the animals usually

Expect a press release soon about two new female cheetahs, Minnie and Mila. We still have Imara, but she has a toe injury of some sort.
